Having just finished making some parts out of this stuff...everything said so far is bang on...
especially the swarf balls...jeezluz stuff is like velcro when it's whirling around...
sharper the tool the better too...I assumed "oh it's plastic, that shouldn't be difficult"...if the slightest bit...
welcome from Kelowna BC, in the heart of the Okanagan Valley.
first it's bushings n spacers...kinda like gateway drugs...next you'll be making your own tools to make more parts
then like any good addict...you'll wanna scratch the itch with more machines to make more parts...
This hobby will...
I got lucky and found a retired chop saw for aluminum on FB marketplace...It's old, like late 80's old.
Got it for cheap, as the seller had been hanging onto it for about a decade and hadn't done anything with it...
Came with a 3 phase, 400something volt motor...all mounted to a cast iron miter...
Welcome from Kelowna BC
The ability to create your own parts feeds the hunger for more tooling and machines...
But with that comes the camaraderie you will find here...
We've likely all paid a bit too much for something at least once...
But the stories and insight gained from such experiences...
My AXA holders are 250-1XX #'s for the SB 9A
The BXA's are 250-2XX are in the rack above the Crawford.
I've a hunch these are CXA size?
that's a darn big holder...probably would dwarf the post for the AXA setup
I have a similar unit to the gizmo pictured in the OP.
It's mounted to a cheapo Tactix rotary tool from Her Magesty's Tool Crib...
The kit includes an arbor, and some mesh style grinding wheels.
Does it work? Is it a bit finicky? Yes. lol But I do get a nice tip out of it...
Where it fails...
My Dad reclaimed some from a couple of old thermostats...I think he had ambitions of using it in a fishing lure...
It's thankfully, safe on a shelf, in his old workshed...
that stuff is pretty dangerous if mishandled
No, we're not known for hard wood timber out here...we don't have the climate maybe?
My Dad put groceries in my gut by his selfless work as a bush worker running equipment...
He got his start back in the 50's...age 14...driving Gramps log haul truck...he didn't ask, he was told...
no...that was when the offense in her opinion was light enough to just get the spoon...
when her anger would force a black-out...that was worse...she'd just beat me unconscious with her bare hands
I just like the name...PDQ...
reminds me of when I was a little guy...Mom would tell me to do something, I'd ask when it had to be started...
PDQ she'd say...it was get off the couch time at that moment, cuz another 30 seconds and that crazy little french lady'd be comin for me with a wooden...
it makes sense...you're not paying for something that was pumped out of a drop forge in an offshore factory...
you're buying a 'Smith's former livelihood
that is a great score on tooling...
I didn't look hard enough locally here in BC...
Instead, I opted to order a kit that makes 5 or 6 pairs of tongs...each one a different jaw type
I think it was under 50 bucks.
One day I'll get around to drilling the holes and pinning them together...
