  • Several Regions have held meetups already, but others are being planned or are evaluating the interest. The Calgary Area Meetup is set for Saturday July 12th at 10am. The signup thread is here! Arbutus has also explored interest in a Fraser Valley meetup but it seems members either missed his thread or had other plans. Let him know if you are interested in a meetup later in the year by posting here! Slowpoke is trying to pull together an Ottawa area meetup later this summer. No date has been selected yet, so let him know if you are interested here! We are not aware of any other meetups being planned this year. If you are interested in doing something in your area, let everyone know and make it happen! Meetups are a great way to make new machining friends and get hands on help in your area. Don’t be shy, sign up and come, or plan your own meetup!

Tips/Techniques Deck structural question - simple

I would do option 1, but rather than 2 2x4s I’d use a 4x4. In addition to fastening it to the joist, a hanger at each end will provide vertical support and reduce twisting. You only need to support the end of a 12” cantilever so my gut tells me that twisting won’t be a problem.

    John W’s tool grinder

Before casting the final pieces for the tool head I need to decide on what collet system or systems to use. I have a set of ER32 collets but no square collets. I’m not sure they even exist. This morning my problem was solved by an email from HomemadeTools. It included an article of 3D...

    Machine Band saw problem

Check that the free wheel is turning easily. The one I had ran in a hardened steel bushing with no obvious oiling points. As long as it was kept oiled it was fine.

    Tool Coaxial indicator

I use mine occasionally (a few time a year). It’s definitely less frustrating than using a regular indicator.

    Lathe worm gear repair

The Southbend 9A uses a similar worm. The key is constrained from moving endwise by a small pin (maybe 1/16”) through the worm and into the key.

    John W’s tool grinder

Here’s a few pictures of my progress to date. This is a rough assembly of the machined parts. Because I’m using aluminum the rotating table needs a pressed in steel axle. The axle has a conical section that mates with the aluminum casting. The machining of those two parts went...

    Another Problem Filled Project

@carrdo Thanks for the additional information. My “sort of” Quorn is a a learning project with hope for something useful when it’s done. I’m doing my own castings in aluminum although I suspect the wheel head assembly will end up being steel weldments. I’ve already found there are almost as...

    Another Problem Filled Project

Oh great, I’m just starting my Quorn. “Fortunately” I’m not constrained by perfectionism so perhaps it won’t be too bad. I have a few questions though. What are the accessories you mention? What are they for and which are the most useful? I did find a few builders who mentioned making the...

Craftex lathe CT043 thread chase gear

Look on the Grizzly site a similar lathe. They seem to be able to get parts. Busybee does sell a complete thread dial for CX704.
