  • Several Regions have held meetups already, but others are being planned or are evaluating the interest. The Calgary Area Meetup is set for Saturday July 12th at 10am. The signup thread is here! Arbutus has also explored interest in a Fraser Valley meetup but it seems members either missed his thread or had other plans. Let him know if you are interested in a meetup later in the year by posting here! Slowpoke is trying to pull together an Ottawa area meetup later this summer. No date has been selected yet, so let him know if you are interested here! We are not aware of any other meetups being planned this year. If you are interested in doing something in your area, let everyone know and make it happen! Meetups are a great way to make new machining friends and get hands on help in your area. Don’t be shy, sign up and come, or plan your own meetup!

    Cheap Bstrd Thread

Dad was the farm "mechanic" early in life, an aviation mechanic and then back to farmer, repair guy and general all around "if it's broken he can fix it guy"...I like to think I was a reasonable student. A 3d printer is the "go to" for fixes on the cheap. The carb bowl gaskets for my VTR were...

    Lost foam aluminium casting issues

Have been using these off Amazon for aluminum. I bake them in the oven @250F for 3-4 hrs then bring to full temp (empty) in the furnace. Close up the furnace with the crucible inside and let cool overnight. Inspect when cool (see if it "rings" when tapped lightly with a wrench) and then use as...

Looking for some ceramic shell (suspenda slurry etc)

Wanting to try some lost PLA/ceramic shell casting and wondering if anyone around Edmonton/Camrose/Red Deer has a part bucket they would sell? A full bucket would be just a little hard to justify to the wife unit. ;) Thanks, Al

    Lost foam aluminium casting issues

The cups do work well, and as they are coated, keep any sand from entering with the pour. Can break them off fairly easy while they are short hard. Wheels for my furnace. :)

    Lost foam aluminium casting issues

I use a single coating of thinned drywall compound with a little Dawn dish soap to aid wetting. Low temp hot glue or 50/50 toilet ring/paraffin wax for filleting/bonding. The coating just gives you control of the surface finish...what you had on the pattern is what you get on the part. Unbound...

Anyone using natural gas for their forge

Technically, yes put together a siphon nozzle setup. Run it on kero or diesel for the most part. Total overkill for aluminum. Also have a Moya style drip burner which has a propane inlet for preheat...usually just use it as forced air/propane for aluminum.

    CXvise3 vise reviews or insight

Have been happy with the one I got. If possible, open the box and LOOK closely at it before you leave the store. The "Kurt" clone I brought home in a closed box was...to be polite...more of a project than I cared for, when I returned it explaining "why"....they put it back on the shelf...while I...

    molten metal temp

Curious if you've tried it and possibly compared the readings with an immersion type? Everything I've read thus far indicates IR guns will not give you the temperature of the melt...an actual comparison and knowing would beat guessing. I use one of these with off the shelf K probes for aluminum...

Tools you waited too long to acquire

I think by far the most useful tool I've added is a 3d printer. Patterns for the foundry, holding fixtures for the mill, rubber (TPU) parts that are fuel resistant (carb bowl gaskets/seals) and so much more. Used to think a cnc was a "Let's make that!" machine, and it is....the 3d printer is...
