I just saw another of these turret lathes on marketplace...1500 for it...it's bigger than this one.
10 horse, 3 ph, the chuck has to be a foot wide minimum
I know I could search the googles...but what's the deal with a Turret style vs ??
Turret lathes in industry shine when there is multi operation reqiorements after primary shaping/roughing, such as drilling, tapping, forming and reaming, etc.
Most have a very small operational dimensions - the one above might be a max 5" diameter and 6" long, for instance. They get a very bad rap from professionals, as they were replaced by CNC lathes eons ago.
I the hands of a hobby machinist that has requirements for small parts, they can be gold - they are pretty cheap for what you get, and usually very accurate, and the are a lot of fun to use.
Be prepared to be 'looked down on' by some machinists.
[update] that Ward can prolly handle 8"diamter by 8" long without problems,, Dorian BXA tool post to boot. Since they have a bad reputation, someone could pick it up for about $750 - this is way better than any offshore 8X22 lathe you can buy. It has to weigh 2600-2700 lbs, for instance....
