I've never seen a vise like that.

It looks like the fixed jaw is at the rear, and the moving jaw slides in and out of the vise. If you're holding thin parts the majority of the moving jaw body is sicking out of the vice. But holding wide parts, the moving jaw is all the way in which would have the greatest contact and support from the vise body. Interesting!
