I need some thrust bearings 1/2" ID. I need about 10 or so. Where do I get them and not spend a fortune? Amazon has them with a 1 month delivery :<. bearings canada but they are $15 each.

McMaster Carr #6655K17.

Tricky bit is M/C only sells to businesses. If you don’t have access to an account, I gave one and could figure out a way to get you the bearings

It really depends on what you are using it for. If it is for a light load, under 1000 rpm application you could use an "unground" bearing where the races are stamped. Motion Canada has locations in Calgary and has these in stocks. I buy most of my bearings and belts from these guys.

There is a guy from Czechia that sells from top of the line to bottom all sorts of bearings. Factory direct. You select bearing and quality you want. Fast shipping from Czechia. Excellent.

Bohemian Seal. Prices are almost impossible to beat AFAIK. Selection also. Even cheaper then PA including shipping (!!!) for orders over $10

I go to transmission supply for bearings and bushings if they are harder to find or don’t have a # on them.

I've ordered some from Ali express. Thanks Johnwa.

Another question. I've downloaded a thrust bearing model from mcmaster carr. Here is a section view of the model. The bearing cage has a ball shaped hole which holds the bearing in place and separated from the other bearings. How is this made? and once made how is the bearing installed ? The only idea I have is to make two halves and glue them together.

Never had any issues with the McMaster Carr drawings. Everything I’ve ever ordered from them fit correctly to the catalog dimensions. They wouldn’t do super detail, like how the balls are retained, just envelope dimensions.

Hey John,

If I was home I could send you some pictures - the retaining cage can be plastic or the brass/bronze type, I think even stainless.

There are needle bearing ones as well. This is from the SKF web site and is good to know:

"Where mounting a single direction thrust ball bearing, it is important to differentiate between the shaft washer and the housing washer. The bore of the shaft washer is ground and always smaller than the bore of the housing washer. The shaft washer should always be placed against a shaft step or fixed shaft component."

The shaft washer will have a light press on fit to a shaft. When you change out the thrust bearings in say, a drill press, it is important to orient the thrust bearing correctly so that it can function and not prevent the thrust from acting on it.

I changed out a bunch of these in some butterfly valves on the ship and the cage part was plastic that retained the balls. similar to the picture @Johnwa put up, but plastic.
