I'd bet he bought the lathe from industry darn cheap, thought that such a lathe should be worth at least double of what he paid, and that it would be awesome to have that capability in his shop. Then reality set in.

I think it is a nice lathe tha has seen hard(ish) use. Two steady rests, Prolly a good-ish deal at 5K$ if someone has the room.
