That's a pretty 'new' machine, by SBL standards, at least, if you can believe the tag on it.

It's not 80+ years old, anyways. Seems to me, that the format of the label was used in the '80's, just prior to them collapsing, before Grizzly Tools bought the name.

When I was looking to get in to hobby machining, a new lathe (circa 1983/84) was quoted to me by SBL, at a bit over $10K USD.

Isn't the depth all the way back to the pulleys the sort of thing @David_R8 didn't like about his South Bend. It took up so much room in the shop. I like that my drive is underneath even if I do have to have a stitched or link flat belt.

May have been, but when you are looking at options, you have to live with other folks ideas about what is 'right' don't you?

If you were really concerned more about space than cost, you could afford to be picky. From my view, this rig looks like a right bargain, and if you had to live with a little less floor space, it seems a good trade. You could also remount the drive from Horizontal to vertical, and drive the lathe from above, if it really caused you stress!

At $1200 that’s a good deal assuming it’s not clapped out.

Yes the horizontal drive on my 10”x 36” 10K was a space killer. Front to back it was about 39” deep.
For comparison my 12” x 36” Clausing which also has horizontal drive but is much more compact, is only 24” deep
