A very similar lathe came up for bid here probably 15 years ago. Bidding was done by putting your bid on a form with your contact info and submitting it in a sealed envelope. The lathe was in nice shape and came with a 3 jaw chuck 4 jaw chuck and face plate and probably most of the tooling it came with new in the 1950's. It came out of Kemano. I bid $2511.01 and I did not win it.

Knowing absolutely nothing about southbend , would this be a bearing with oil pump unit, or are the bearings just lubed by those oil cups? What kind of accuracy could be expected with it being driven by just a lead screw ?

Without knowing the age it will have plain bearings lubes by felt wicks. Very reliable and long lasting if well maintained.
The lead screw will serve two purposes:
1) threading by way of half nuts, as accurate as any lathe of that vintage
2) power feed by way of a longitudinal slot on the lead screw which drives a key and bevel gear arrangement.

My South Bend 10K had the same arrangement and worked great.

That’s what I didn’t know, thanks so much. The lead with key arrangement would keep it from excessive wear. Cool.
