Bars.JPG

My AXA tool post / holder set came with a 5/8" boring bar holder. I purchased a 5/8" boring bar and got to thinking that it would be nice to used the holder for my other boring bars. To that end I made a 5/8" OD x 1/2" slotted steel sleeve for the my 1/2 boring bar. That worked well so I fashioned 1/2" OD x 3/8", 5/16", and 1/4" ID slotted brass sleeves for the remainder of the bars. Every thing seems to work well, the bars are securely held by the holder.

Now having done all this I have discovered that the tool holder no longer accepts the 5/8" boring bar. The retaining ring in the holder has not sprung back to it's original size. So..... What to do? Suggestions anyone?

Bevel the end of the 5/8 boring bar and tap it in, it'll open that spring up no problemo

Or pull the spring out and open the slit with a flat heas screw driver

I'm thick @YYCHM.

I don't understand what you are, asking.

Did you make sleeves to go in sleeves to go in sleeves?

I thought only the larger sizes that won't fit a regular tool holder slot required the special holder and sleeve. I further thought there was one holder for each larger size, not multiple sleeves.

As you can prolly tell. I'm lost.

How do you pull the spring out?
With a hammer like so

You will obviously need to loosen those Allen screws on the side first

Are these two bolts not pulling pinch pins (blue arrows) which compress the sleeve around the BB?

Back out the bolts a bit, tap the pins back and then use a hammer and drift as @phaxtris shows.

Should come right out and then open the slot with a flat head screwdriver and reinstall.

Looks like your secondary sleeves are a bit undersize on the OD, resulting in the collapse of the holder sleeve.

Drill and tap the holder for a jack screw, locate it between the two factory screws. Very crude sketch attached.

The way this works is that the 2 bolts compress a cam which squzzes the boring bar. Undo both screws complately, take out the cams, re-assemble and it should be good to go.

Ok, got it. Just had to back the SHCSs out a bit and give them a light tap. That backed the camming nuts out. The 5/8" bar slides right in now.

THANKS
