The chuck on the spindle is the Bison you could order from HH Roberts for CA$190, I have one. I think they only have the 1 piece jaw ones now.

Pratt chucks were very well made. Part of Pratt Bernerd. I have 2 of these chucks and am very happy with them.

Perhaps concerning is the reason for the upgrade. Is it damaged?

Agreed for the old stock and I also have a bunch, but there is weird stuff going on with the brand and some of their line has recently be lower cost import stuff. In fact I'm doubting Pratt Bernerd even exists (Pratt Bernerd America is a different legal entity) and it's possibly all a bunch of BS surfing on the orginal English company's good name.

Pratt, Pratt Bernerd, Pratt Bernerd America, Pratt Bernerd Atlas and Pratt Bernerd International. Can't remember all the details and probably never fully understood it, but some of them were low cost offshore stuff, "sourced globally". Not sure if PBA is separate from Pratt Bernerd, or PB is even around anymore. Is PBA under licence? Did PBA buy the name from the trustee? PB was British but PBA is in the same locale as Atlas and Clausing who I believe don't make lathes but might be rebranding offshore stuff? Maybe that is their shtick?

Very confusing, and imo nuts that you'd do that to a brand that was solidly in the high quality category, but personally I'd stay away from PB/PBA new stuff as to me it's just not clear who they are, who makes it and what they are all about.

yeah, what is with all that? Not many years ago, I checked out Pratt-bernerd UK, the cost of a new set of jaws for my 3J chuck, and the prospect of possibly buying a smaller 6 jaw chuck. I balked at the price for either of them.

Now it seems that they don't exist any more? You used to be able to give the serial number for your chuck, and they would supply precision jaws specifically ground for *your* chuck.

I saw this done about 20 years ago for a "precision series' 3J chuck, and the new jaws held a 3/4" gauge pin at .0002 right out of the package.

Sadly this seems gone now. makes me sad/mad.
