That lathe is in better shape and cleaner that a bunch I have bid on here in Calgary. Nowadays I'm not in the market.

In 1954 Monarch was already using induction hardened ways. The wear would be in the saddle / cross slide / compound. If there was always oil in the headstock, the innards of that lathe would most likely be in top shape. They used helical cut gears in the HS.

These machines are built like tanks and will run circles around any new 1340 size lathe. They are heavy. It has a clutch. None of the levers seem to have been busted off. D1-6 spindle nose.

This is a post WW2 production machine. Unless someone really beat up on it (and no, the looks don’t count), this could be a decent machine, especially if the price stays low.

I love the Monarch lathes, the dirty shop and poor condition of the other machines require that the lathe getsm a good looking at before bidding.

Even if it was 'rode hard' the bones on a Monarch are excellent. Of the US made lathes, they are the best (In my opinion)

the real trick is to get it for a good price.

If only I had space. Beautiful lathe, you just can't beat the look of machine tool castings from that era. Patterns that were created by hand, and by eye to both look and "feel" right for the end user. Not boxy/squared off stuff from cad straight to machines. Modern stuff, while maybe better in materials and performance will just never hold a candle to the old stuff in aesthetics IMO.

Looks like it's in a pretty easy to get to spot for a rollback/trailer too. Cheap lathe, and easy move. If only I had space....

I'd have thought the real trick is to get it home in sound condition and then in good working order.

Yes the parts that are all crucial are solid hardened cast iron, I'd consider buying this even if it has rats infesting the thing chewing the wiring and controls all to hell. I would not consider buying anything else there.

But then I'd first want to know that I can move this during a pandemic. IMO a dealer will steal this

leaving in about 10 days. We will be swinging up through Burlington about 2 weeks after we get to woodstock. Interested in have a few short stops and shop tours!

Let me know when your coming down, I’ll have “coffee” on.

I saw this auction a few days ago.... it all looks like junk except for this lathe. Every tool looks like it was rode hard and put away wet.
This auction came in my feed late last week and I agree the lathe is one of the few items that does not look bagged. Noticed there was a set of machine skates also listed. They look homemade.

sold for 1525$

Just a couple weeks ago a CX601 mill sold for $2525 to give you a comparison.

another comparison, I believe these weigh 5000 pounds or 2.5 tons. $235 per ton cast iron scrap weight.... $587.5 plus $50 bucks for motor scrap copper.. so sold for about 2.4 times the scrap price.

For a guy that needs a bigger lathe, it is a worthy project. Given the shop and the rest of the condition, one should suspect hidden flaws. Almost any monarch is worth the fix-up in my opinion, unless the bed is completely trashed, etc.

Somebody got a good deal.
I agree... a great deal. especially if a POS BB CX601 is worth 2500
