Mitutoyo Vernier Caliper - Amazon

I don't think I'd spend that sort of money when you can get an easy to use digital version. The digital is no doubt not as durable and won't be a Mitutoyo but I think just as useable and accurate.

Yeah you can get digital made in China that is much easier to use and very accurate. They even solved battery issues in their last version.

I like mine -I have that same model. I now use my electronic versions from Mit daily. If you still have good eyes, they work well.

Sure, but if you wanted a vernier rather than digital caliper, was a good price for a Mitutoyo.

I'm not a fan of Chinese measuring instruments.

Mitutoyo 530-104 Vernier Caliper, pretty good price at $63.25:

Here's the link:

Frankly, I am with you.

I saw your post and clicked on the link thinking you might not really know what a true vernier is. But you did!

I would buy one of these in a heart beat if it was imperial instead of metric. I have an old Mitutoyo imperial vernier, but I'd like one in the shop and at the house.

While I agree with others that digital and dial are faster and more accurate, I do not agree that they are more reliable or more robust.

In my humble opinion, nothing beats a high quality vernier for durability and bullet proof reliability. Digital sometimes lies and dial sometimes sticks.

It's dual scale...imperial up top, metric down low.

using a vernier calliper has the same mental advantage as using a slide rule. It’s very easy to do close-enough measurements. And it’s never wrong. Ever grabbed a digital caliber, measured something, and then discovered the measurement is wrong because previous user zeroed the display with the jaws open?

Agreed TOTALLY.

And how about when it's just plain wrong? Electronics fail. Much more often than we know!

I like a nice electronic scale as much as the next guy. But I would never ever trust one as much as I trust a pure mechanical unit like a vernier.

The photo on line at the link that was posted shows metric only. Don't think I have the courage to order with that ambiguity in what I would get.

The only calipers I don't like are the ones with a dial on them - and that is b/c they are very delicate. You cannot drop them, at least you cannot drop them in a way that will make the dial move. If you do, they are most likely toast.

My dad has his trusty Polish vernier calipers he used his whole life & I think he got them from his dad. So I guess they are durable enough.

I have some Mitutoyo equipment and their electronic versions are no different then Chinese. I would not be shocked if Chinese ones were initially copes. I would not be shocked if some top of the line Chinese stuff is better then Mitutoyo - only for electronic stuff, Chinese seem to still have issues making good close tolerance stuff in quantity & cheap.

I don't like dial calipers. I prefer vernier or electronic. I paid full price for my Mitutoyo electronic and know that it is money well spent.

I have both vernier and digital Mitutoyo calipers and like both. I do find the vernier getting a bit harder to read, due to poor lighting i'm sure.

The photos are misleading. Lead photo shows both but another photo shows metric only. The specs say metric

I bought a dial test indicator last month....in metric...:(

The only "metric only" device in my shop. At least it's application is usually only to show variation so will still be functional for me.

Ya, I'm not jumping at the chance to buy one with that confusion. I'm gunna post an Amazon question about it.

My experience is like others. My vernier is about 40 years old, still has the leather case, was used extensively in the field to measure targets, under cars and trucks, out in a tractor cab, has been dropped a few times in its life, and still works perfectly. Once you learn to read a vernier, they are fast and can even do approximate half a thou.

In any event, if anyone here has a 6" Mitu Imperial vernier and prefers digital or dislikes the vernier, I'll buy the vernier at a fair price from you so you can upgrade or whatever. I really would like two. One at the shop and one at the house. In fact, I'd like 4. Another for my range box, and the 4th for the truck cab.

This link shows a different dial & 'discontinued'.

But it does show up in Mitutoyo catalog. Sometimes faces are interchangeable on same body, so that could be it

says Ships from and sold by Amazon.ca ... which usually makes me skeptical, especially using stock photos
But when you click on Brand (Mitutoyo) it does appear to show a bunch of comparable Mit products & prices.
