Milling Machine and Lathe $2000.00

Just an observation, there seems to be a surge in machine tool ads from profiles with women's names, and very often old profiles with join dates in the mid 2000s

The ads invariably prove to be scams when you investigate more deeply.

I surmise that the scammers are also hackers, or paid hackers for passwords to dormant accounts with which to use to run scams. Facebook is becoming almost useless

That really sucks. Join date has always been a test I do. Recent joins are ignored. But what you are telling me is that old join dates should be ignored too.

Crap.

Yes, unfortunately. I’ve noticed Facebook showing two very definitely deceased friends as ‘online’, recently.
As much as I would miss the internet if it was gone, I certainly don't think that it's good for society. Humans are just too greedy as a whole to have anything good and not screw it up.

The Law Of Unintended Consequences. Wonder how long after A. G. Bell’s telephones started appearing on desks before people were getting calls from long-lost relatives who needed money?

I've never had a facebook account, don't want to feed the evil empire.
I know I miss out on a lot of good tools for sale on their market place but the requirement to submit a photo for their facial recognition data base is just going too far for me.
At least on the forums classified ads there is a better chance of dealing with a trustworthy person.

That is exactly how I felt until Facebook marketplace became the defacto place to buy and sell farm equipment. Most farmers do not have an online presence. But their kids do. And that is how a lot of farm equipment is sold. These ads usually result in a cellular call to dad or gramps who also prefers a face to face sale.

So I got a Facebook account to buy and sell farm stuff.

I didn't have to do that...... But I did have to actually use Facebook for a while before they would give me access to marketplace.

Sadly, scams can happen here too - and have happened here. Be especially wary of a PM from a brand new member offering you a deal on something. We do have filters that detect bad actors, but unfortunately, they are not 100% effective. The main difference here, is that our reporting system ALWAYS results in action. All members should read the system warning posted on our classifieds forum. It is good advice for all on-line buying.

I used Facebook years ago, and was a relatively late adopter, in my group of friends/for my age (44, now).
I'd stopped using it entirely, probably 8-10 years ago, until Marketplace became more or less the primary buy and sell option in Ontario.
I miss Craigslist quite a lot. Kijiji isn't great, but it's not Facebook.

(In fairness, I use Instagram daily, to follow the work of people I know and like, and people I don't know whose work I admire.
If I find I'm spending too much time on it, I delete the app from my phone.
There's just enough frustration to accessing it through a mobile browser that I get irritated in about ten minutes, and do something else)
