Milling Machine $1500.00

Now that's a good deal. Back a trailer in, hand over some cash, and stop for a couple bottles of simple green on your way home, and you've got yourself a good mill.

Curious what the AS-IS is in reference too, but unless it is majorly clapped out from a life of neglect and abuse, it's probably got a long life of home shop use still left in the tank.

Nope that is NOT a good deal.

The key is that although they claim it is in working condition they also know the thing is such a garbage someone would want to sue the first time they ran it.

It is very likely also why they dont have it connected

I suspect even that they pulled it from service and had it ready for a dealer who offered so little they thought I can sell this for more on kijiji

Suit yourself. Do you know that for a fact, or are you scared of a little elbow grease and manual labour with some cleaners and a putty knife. Dirt, chips and coolant tell me a machine has actually been used in the not too distant past. Check the guys other listing and he's listing some office space. Maybe he owns some commercial real estate, and the mill was left behind by a defaulted tenant. Maybe he's selling as is, because he knows nothing about it, and right now it's existance is a problem for him? You'll never know the real story unless you call and ask. A picture can tell a thousand words, but never the whole story.

You make a lot of assumptions about why it's a bad deal vs the one you just missed that was not only more money, but had less options and farther away. Total landed price for the first mill would have been doublt what this one is and it's in your backyard. IMO this one is a much better value. Your mileage may vary.

this isn't my first rodeo... I've looked at more than 100 mills in the gta and I already have another line on a mill.

afraid of work? hahaha

and the landed costs are the same... maybe 150 more in gas is all.

I don’t think there are even 100 mills in all of SK let alone that many for sale! We take what we can get when we can get it here. It would be nice to have more choice but every once in a while something incredible comes up for sale and you jump on it no matter what the cost.

I have considered trips to Thunder Bay to buy equipment. It is only 13 or so hours away. It is all relative.

When I grew up in Sask I only ever knew of one person with a lathe and I only think I got to see it once or twice, that's why I sometimes run my knuckles into the chuck just to prove its real that I have one in my basement. Hopefully there's a few deals out there for you.

I meant over a period of time... but yeah having lived in SK I'd agree ;)

I'd bet that one dealer here I just communicated with the other day has more used mills in stock than all the ones available for sale in SK and MB combined.

I'm just outside of Thunder Bay. Feel free to reach out if you need.

It is difficult to judge condition from 2 pictures. None of the pictures are up close so one can only see that it is var speed mill, with one power feed, what looks like a DRO, a drill chuck and a vice. Probably R8.

This mill would had to be in really bad shape to fetch only 1500 in AB. I mean like the table was used for a flat surface to hammer nails - and the rest of it for similar purpose. Even if the mill head is in terrible condition and more or less dead - one can (certainly easier in ON then AB) get a new used one for well under $500.

On the other hand 1500 + 500 is almost 2200 someone was selling a working Kent mill in ON.

Certainly one wishes they lived in ON where they have plenty of choice for very low price.

Heck, if any of the Ontario crew from this forum is interested in making a few bucks, has a decent size shed, and a flatbed trailer/trucking connections he or she could easily make a few bucks reselling to us out West - and a $1500 Ontario mill is normally a $3500 Albertistan/Saskatchistan mill so even at $2000-$2200 there would be some of us who would gratefully pay that.

I finally found a BP clone but if a slightly bigger lathe wandered West I'd be interested . . .

Just sayin, lol . . . ;)

Yeah I am telling my parents to do a mill run. But it would have to be like 2. Remember ON is FAR. With load and regular car its at least a week. In winter (!!!). If I did not have a job I might consider doing such runs.

Remember gas is not cheap these days, diesel trucks are expensive unless you get very old one and finally it takes over a month to sell.

Plus what if there are issues?

So for two mills maybe worth it - expected profit is 4k - gas - use of truck (tire wear at 7000km+ is noticeable, especially if you have 8) - time you burn driving / fixing / advertising.

Did I mention risks?

I am debating buying a heavy pick up and a flat bed.... seriously.

I am debating buying a heavy pick up and a flat bed.... seriously.

Immediately after buying it, it will sit and gather rust. Ask me how I know. Just spent 15k giving my diesel 2500 a face lift. I could have bought a bunch of machines for that. The only reason for doing it was that a new truck was over $100k. And I need the truck to haul fertilizer, seed, etc.

Trucks and trailers are just like car washes. If you need rain, go wash the car.

Seriously though, I do know what you mean. I have been to visit a few resellers on behalf of other members here who asked me to go have a look at a machine for them.

All of them have very serious markups, (around 50 to 100%) and none of them are getting rich. To make decentfdz money and pay the bills, I think you would have to flip 10 big machines a month. All the ones that I have seen do much less than that.

I'm not trying to rain on your parade. Just sayin it's a harder living than it appears to be.

Now, if you love doing it and you are just doing it to keep busy and have fun, then have at it.

not me, I go all in on idea like that. It is something I can do as semi-retirement time filler. I'd wont tax my health too much, and I can have fun while waiting to cherry pick the top items for myself.

who said anything about getting rich? Or even making a profit.

I just want the ability to see more machines, have the ability to get first crack at every one, and to be able to wait for the best stuff for me, while shuffling the decent stuff to those people worthy of owning it at a rate the people who want goods can afford. That and I like to fill my time doing that which I enjoy
