Is it just me?

Every time I see one of these drill/mill comb's, I wonder why people buy them and what they are particularly good for?

Seems like they would not be very good for milling, and when used as a lathe quite limited length wise.

Obviously I'm missing something.

Perhaps that is why so many of them appear to be unused when put up for sale....

When I had to start over at age 45 after a frank discussion of my marriage skills, my shop was a 6ft x 6ft garden shed. One of these was all I could fit. Lathe is useable, the drill press is passable but awkward, the mill is useless for anything stronger than stale toast. But it’s what I had, so it’s what I used. Still made money with it.

I'm happy to guess. I have a buddy with the smithy version. He is very happy with it for lots of reasons.

Small shop, no room for two machines.

Small jobs, only used once in a while.

Got a good deal on it.

Any mill is better than no mill.

Any lathe is better than no lathe.

Wife didn't kill him when he brought it home. Easy to convince her by showing her what it would have cost to buy separate machines.

Bottom line, he is happy with it. Good enough reason for me.
