This is a weird looking unit, no brand name looks like 18 swing but sure doesn't look like 5 feet long.

This looks VERY similar to my buddy's homemade lathe that he got off a former co-worker's Dad. Headstock and square ways are almost identical, and the tail stock is very similar. Makes me wonder if there was some magazine article about "Build Your Own Metal Lathe" or something in a Popular Mechanics magazine in the 70's or something?
 
5ft looks like the overall length or maybe the bed length. 24” or so between centers I’d say.
