LATHE, HERBERT MINOR 10 x 22. in Power Tools in Hamilton

Unless that thing is worn out I think that might not be so bad of a deal. I don't know anything about that make but it looks alot like a Monarch maybe? Sure looks rugged and stout.

How ya gonna get that into the basement?
Well, my first question to the seller is how much it weighs! I'm hoping (probably in vain) that it isn't quite as heavy as it appears in the photo. I had a quick look on lathes.co.uk but couldn't find anything about this model.

I bet you it IS as heavy as it looks. Hydraulic speed control and all

I think there is information at lathes.uk under the Holbrook name. The Holbrook lathe looks pretty much the same as the one in the kijiji ad. According to Tony, the lathes quality was right up there to compete with Dean Smith & Grace. Towards the end of the write up he states the weight as 1680 lbs.

No way. Most of that base is a casting. Look at the corners, the foot access and the drain trough. Then look at that solid web bed.

Betting more like 1680 kg not pounds. I've never been wrong by more than 20,000 kg for something like that..... ;)

I was looking at that too, my astute friend said he’d seen it on kijiji before. A google search found a post in this forum from last year about it. Makes me wonder if there’s something up with it. It is pretty much exactly what I want for a lathe though.

Indeed, with the asking price cut by $700. In that earlier thread there was a link to the manual for the machine and it confirmed the weight at roughly 2,000 pounds. It is conceivable to get that into your shop; not mine!

Craig

@YYCHM I thought you swore off basement moves after extracting that lathe for @CanadiumLOL..

Yes indeed Craig, but for @trlvn I will get it done. Gravity is in my favour and I would leave a suitable inscription on the bottom - I guess totally hypocritical …..but what can ya do. :)

Any word @trlvn ?

@Brent H Thanks for the offer but I've had complete radio silence from the seller. There are some strange people on Kijiji. The ad is still active, however.

Craig
(Kijiji says there have been 2,860 visits to the ad!!)

Another super high quality lathe for small dollars. I've got a smaller Hollbrook B8 but would love to have a Minor. An exceptional lathe and maker in the class of Monarch, DSG etc. I'd put that lathe at 3000 lbs or more.

As Craig says, there are thousands of views. I'd have guessed it sold ages ago, and he's one of those inconsiderate types who doesn't delete ads....but the ad was just posted 3 days ago so that doesn't seem right. At that price, you'd think you'd have to be over there the day it appeared, but 2850 views suggests its been up for a while and was just renewed....hmm.

I inquired about it as well (for work) and haven't heard back. People get busy, are traveling, etc... otoh if you're asking the weight and someone else is saying "when can come pick it up" those queries can get ignored. There should have been a small stampede for it

The seller finally got back to me and confirmed that the lathe is 2,000 pounds so I'm out of the running. @Rauce what about you?

I just had a nice chat with the owner of the Hendey lathe out near Ottawa.

Something at the right price that needs some love is more my speed haha.

Need to figure out how to broach the subject of driving out to get it in the next few weeks with my SO.

That weight is wrong, it actually weighs 2,700 lbs. I think Tony might have fixed that error on his site lately, he has been advised in any case
