Landslide in BC

I saw this along with the wildfires . I know some of you are close to this . Stay safe ! :)
Sometimes living in paradise seems to leave feeling like you have a target on ones back. I'm pretty close to the Fraser River and just above the flood plain and I am pretty confident that we're going to keep our toes dry even if it goes suddenly, which I don't think it will. At 1 km thick and 30 m high, I am pretty sure that it will top and reasonably slowly erode a channel back to it's original depth....... Going to be a heck of a you tube video if I am wrong though......
Funny thing, my insurance company called me last night to say that incase I am wrong, "We got yer back Jack".......

Hopefully the effect on humans, Members here or not is minimal. It sounds like they will be. The power of nature always amazes (and humbles) me.

What a beautiful area. You guys out there are lucky to call that home.

Even with the perils that mother nature throws our way, how goofy some of the rules are, and the over the top cost of living; I couldn't agree with you more BC is my idea of paradise.
Which is why I get so pissed off when so many of these are human caused, out of pure stupidity and laziness; ie, campfires left to burn out, ferries that run aground and sink because of a lovers quarrel, a drunk captain in an oil tanker...... The list goes on....
The things mother nature tosses at us though are a pure marvel of the forces of nature and the formation and transformation of the landscape.......
It's funny though, my first thought was "I wonder if the lower river is gold bearing....... And how much time do I have?"....

Thanks for the video @Dan Dubeau ! I've been wondering what the situation really was. It looks much less likely to be a serious problem than the news makes it sound. Not that It couldn't go bad, but less likely for sure. My guess is that it will leak slowly and form a new river to the old depth over a long period of time. Never say never, but that seems the most likely to me. If the slide was narrower it might be a very different story.

It's also a testament to the power of nature. Man couldn't have done that in years and nature did it in an instant.

Our government is doing a great job, free sandbags for all those effected.
Might be better to find a Dutch boy and hire his thumb though.

I don't think there's much the government, or anybody else can do about this. It's just a game of wait and see, if some folks are comforted with having sand bags around their houses, having them might help some. Down stream along the Fraser we are only expecting levels to reach spring freshet at worst.... It's the debris potential that I find most worrisome, the fish will be the hardest impacted at the end of the day.....

I think I’d get some backhoes in there and start cutting a channel.
The gold did cross my mind to.

We just got back into our house after a week's evacuation due to the Park fire. This was our second evacuation and third serious scare. The first (Ponderosa fire, 2012) came much closer. The feeling of helplessness is hard to describe, though I don't seem to be suffering PTSD this time around. Still shuttling cars and unpacking tools. Living in the forest seems like a dream to those who don't. For those of us who do, it's a dream interrupted by a recurring nightmare. The homeowner's insurance bill is a monthly reminder, lest you forget.
