Spindle is 1.75-8, back plates can be had from LMS.
I paid $1200 a few years ago for mine, but still don't have the steadies.
The threaded spindle is not a problem, they provide 2 locking dogs to prevent the chuck coming off if using it in reverse. Never had a problem using it that way.

Mounts using M6 SHCS into the chuck. There is a pair, on opposing sides. I haven't drilled/tapped my 5C chuck yet for this.

Yes, the M6 goes into the chuck, to tighten the clamp. (And no, the bolt doesn't go into the spindle thread, it is just long enough to force the clamp into the groove on the spindle)
