Why on earth would anybody have 30 or 40 blank jaws?

Because they are soft jaws made from Alu and they machined them to fit the job at hand. Gives better work holding and takes away the runout problem.

They must have used the lathe for production runs.

Blank jaws certainly do come in handy for small- large production runs. Machine them just as RobinHood mentioned. Certainly handy to have some on hand, even machining a 1 off at times.

This is a very nice machine. I've always been partial towards a slant bed machine. (well sort of - like the Leblond the veeway is asymetric), leading to far better life and holding accuracy longer.
