The cast iron legs are worth more than the price alone...

You know, if you had that for a month, you could fix your other lathe and turn a tidy profit at the end.....
Hey I know, I'd love to restore that too but Pembroke is a long cold drive in the winter. But that said... I'm sure thinking it over.

I wonder if I can fit the lathe in my back seat with the seats down I do have lots of trunk space in the jetta

I've also been thinking about @Aburg Rapid Prototype's 12x36 gearhead lathe that he just dropped the price on too... I can fix it, use it until get a new 1440 and then flip it too...

Not much profit in that after repairs and having to transport it to Toronto though what with gas prices what they are and terrible fuel mileage hauling a trailer there and back. Sometimes I do wish I had a pick up truck

Love pictures like these, When I am buying machinery for big $
How he keeps his shop is a good indication of many things. Including how this lathe was kept.
Not complaining at 150$ but at 3 or 5K - Different story.

You can eat off the floors of my shop! Thus my machines are kept in the same fashion.

I wouldn't restore it, that just becomes one more thing on the list of things to do. Clean it up and oil it and get making parts. That alone increases its value 10x current asking price.

I have this compulsion with old iron... but yes you are right. I wish I knew someone local with the same lathe to see if I could cram this in my trunk with the seats down...

If seats down extends you into the trunk, you should be golden. Give yourself a couple hours to break down into manageable pieces if you are alone, or grab a buddy and take the drive and legs off... Looks like bed length on this one is 54".... Might be mistaken and it might be camera angle.

LMAO!

This is what most filers think (especially my wife). It just isn't true. My machinery is very well kept and very well used. But I'd highly recommend that you don't lick my floor when you are done eating!

On the flip side, most pilers think filers don't use their machines for real work. They just look at them all day and have no clue how to use them or properly maintain them. That isn't true either.

Just two wonderful kinds of machinists! There is room in this world for both. I'm gunna do a survey thread just for Poop and Giggles!

I like your description. Filers and Pilers lol
Yeah a poll or survey would be good lol

My words of choice was from my experience, nothing more

Not my words. Heard that from a work efficiency expert at Steelcase. Here is a link to the first version of the story.

I just discovered I've told the story 5x now. (rolls eyeballs)

No worries. As you can read in the links above. I place great value on our differences.

That shop photo just screams "old school" shop to me, everything in there that an old proprietor has needed or will need for any job of any kind that some business neighbor or local farmer might ever bring in the door ....and most important...still got shop floor space available if it's a big'un.

Repair shops like that in my small town have all dried up and blown away , either the old guy that everybody knew for miles around retired or died and the others just moved to bigger centers. I sure do miss those public meeting places where a cold cup of coffee was always in the machine no mater what time of day it was.

I am fighting this compulsion myself, the cobbled drive on the little shaper gave up the ghost, and I am trying to get it back up and running without turning it into a restoration (I have enough of those on the go now). I have promised myself that I won't even paint it while I have it halfway clean and accessable. I sure do hate the color of it though, some kind of pale mustard vomit hue...... As long as old tools are black, I really don't care what color you paint them. ;)

Whatever you do, don't involve @TorontoBuilder in any discussion of tool colors. If you think vomit mustard is bad take a boo at some of his favs..... If you let him help you, you will be wishing for vomit mustard!

I saw that, but we are safe...... None of those are shades of black. :p

There's something about old lineshaft era tools that just beg to be painted black, and this one once was as well. If it was in better condition than it is, I might have considered going a little bit deeper into it, but there's a big hole in the table where a tee nut once lived that I just can't get past. Lol. The 16" Butler shaper that sits beside it has more issues, but is a better restoration project, so that will eventually be the shaper of focus.
