Hobart Meat Slicer help

Hi guys. Hope all is well with everyone! I have been gone all summer but now back in the shop a bit. :D

The project now is repairing a Hobart Commercial Meat Slicer for my nephew who just opened a little cafe. The data plate is missing from the unit so I have no info except what I can get from google images searches. My best guess from images is that it is a Model #1612. He was told it had a bent shaft and was thinking I could straighten it or make a new one. I removed the gears so that the only thing running was the motor and it still sounded rough so I think it is, instead, a bad bearing. My dilemna is how to remove the bearing. I cannot find a service manual and the parts manual does not seem to be a lot of help (if I have the correct model) I was able to get the rotor out of the motor. The bearing is either part of, or sits in/on this threaded hub. I can't see the threads matching anything in the slicer so don't know what they are for. I tried gently pulling the bearing with a 3 arm puller but don't want to get too aggressive. It seemed solid but I was being timid. I figure it would be better to consult with those more in the know! Anyone familiar with a bearing mounted like this?

Don't know if if will work for you but when I have questions about older stuff I go to the parts places online. Usually the guys who run these sites are retired repair fellows who can explain things in a few mins., with no hard feelings about getting the repair job itself—they just sell parts.

Hobart has a site like this for commercial slicers: https://www.oldhobartslicerparts.com/hobart16121712parts.html

Might be worth a phone call or email / pic if you haven't already figured it out.

I poked around some sites a bit but was less than optimistic. Not sure if I saw that one but it looks good.

Thanks @CalgaryPT I will check it out.

Shaw that threaded hub looks like a labyrinth seal (sometimes called a rotary seal) that is designed to keep the meat that's being sliced out of the motor. It is made of of the threaded part you show and a close fitting housing that literally threads contaminants away from the inside of the motor. The threaded part should turn with the rotor so the inner race of the bearing may be part of it. Or the threaded part may be pressed onto the inner race. If you have a hydraulic press that would be best for removing the bearing and inner part of the seal.

If you look at the bearing replacment kit for the 1612 Shawn, it looks to be a pretty standard press fit bearing. If @John Conroy is correct and that is a rotary seal (makes sense), I would think that bearing should come off with force.

Thanks @John Conroy That would make sense. It is on the motor, which leads into the gearbox, which then drives the blade so no meat contact but yes, the intent being to keep the gearbox oil out of the motor makes sense (which apparently, it did not do perfectly as can be seen in the photo) I don't have a hydraulic press but will try some pullers. I was able to get the rotor out of the back plate today. That bearing is probably the culprit but of course, will change what I can since it is open. Everything is either dirty or gummed up with old grease. Interesting project. I might get a little more aggressive tomorrow with that bearing.

@CalgaryPT Thanks. I have looked at some of the repair kits. There are variations in them. I have not seen the plastic gear before but I think the gear in the unit is fine. However, the seals will need to be replaced. I tried emailing the guys in the first link you posted but it was late Friday and I see they are in Florida (same time zone as me) so I might hear back on Monday or might just call them.

I was finally able to get in touch with the Hobart tech at the above mentioned website. He confirmed @John Conroy 's info on the seal but he called an oil pusher or something... but labyrinth seal essentially renamed for Hobart...

He also confirmed that it does just push on so I guess I will get to test the new press... Now that I have confirmed it, I will try more heat too.
