The situation that brings about this sale is unfortunate but it could be a decent price for some one wanting a NEW lathe. No mention of extras.

Hmm, I wonder if its the same model - this was 12.9K at Modern Mar-2017 with DRO, taper attachment & quick change toolpost. Have the prices gone up that much?

$20k delivered. *whistle sound* That's getting close to new Standard Modern prices. Though having said that, I was recently quoted $15k for a used SM 1440, so maybe the asking price of this one isn't so far off.

That machine is the same as the GH1440W that I bought from Modern. I really like mine but I didn't pay anywhere near 20K for it.

Hey John, did that light come with the lathe or did you add that?

The 24V Halogen light that came with my lathe is a total PIA. It burns out regularly, is almost impossible to find bulbs for and when you do they are very pricey. I'd like to replace the entire assembly. I guess I'd prefer 24V but I'd go for 110 in a heart beat if it got me a decent lamp.

On first blush, yours looks pretty darn nice!

Any advice?

That was the first thing I tossed, it was a POS and was mounted in a stupid position. I tried relocating it but it was still awkward to use so I replaced it with one of the el-cheapo desk lamps from Ikea like the ones I use on my mill. I don't seem to have a picture of it mounted but you can see the one on the mill in the last pic. Very cheap and they are much easier to adjust and stay put when you set them. Not very rugged but again they are cheap,LoL

Rip the guts out of it. Replace them with a 110V (or even 220V) LED bulb. Easy to find, lots of choice as far as sizes go and going down in price.

I see you even moved it from the cross slide to the backsplash for the second set of photos.

I get the drift. Mine will be history shortly. I'd like to maintain the current mounting on the carriage though. It's convenient to have it always lighting up the working area.

Thanks John

You need to learn to be a little more emphatic and blunt about such things..... LMAO!

But I get the drift despite your softspoken advice. It shall be history as soon as I can find a decent replacement.

Too funny! Suits your avatar too!

Really? I have the 24v on my mill and it is great! Also halogen, heats up my hands and has easily 1000h of burn time or more. I have a second one somewhere and should install as well.

I just recently priced similar sized lathe, used, but heavy duty as in over sized bore etc. Very nice, but clearly used, not abused. I priced it at 7500 and it sold at that price.

You can get a King 14x40 for 10k all in. Maybe not as good 14x40 but its brand new with warranty etc. And for 2k less. I believe for just touch more - if my memory serves me right, 14k you can get fully loaded heavy duty big bore 14x40. So 12k seems like too much $$$. If it is much nicer then the King I would offer at most 10k, probably less (you need to load yourself). Remember it is used machine, even if owner says he never used it.

@Tom Kitta - Yeah, i was being somewhat sarcastic. Used machine prices are going crazy these days, right along side real estate and lumber. 5 years ago, I paid ~$3200 for a used American-branded Taiwanese lathe lathe incl. delivery across the country. Even that seemed about 1/3 too high to me at the time, but it was through a dealer, came with all the accessories, and was easy to arrange. Around the same time, there was a mint late model Standard Modern 1340 at an Edmonton dealership selling for $5k. At the time, I thought it was too rich, but I'm kicking myself now for not picking it up. Prices on those seem to have risen 50-100% in that time.

To me the ad reads that this fellow bought his dream machine last spring and now due to medical circumstances has to sell it without ever making a chip..
My point to this post was if you wait to long to by your forever machine, forever might not be as far away as you'd hoped. It's got me thinking about a better milling machine, maybe not new but just better.
Sorry for going all morbid but sometimes life sucks, I think I'll watch the news and cheer myself up (note of sarcasm)

Yup really. Mine sucks. No better way to say it than that.

Bulbs might last a week if I'm careful not to hit the lamp. Changing them is a royal PIA. Finding them on the net is an even bigger PIA.

I'm gunna do exactly what @RobinHood suggests.

Exactly why I bought a new mill this year.
