I texted the number an hour ago with no response yet.

EDIT: Got a response, asking price is $3500. Thoughts on the machine/price? I've got an appt to go see it this Saturday, any volunteers to view it with me? ;)

I can help you view the lathe.

I have a Colchester Master 2500 - the bigger brother of the Student.

Send me a pm so we can work out the details.

Looks like a very good prospect. All the usual comments on condition and what attachments are included - apply. It is pretty short, but that may work well for you? Probably has a decent size spindle hole and maybe a removable gap section.

It looks pretty dirty, but that can work for you. I’ve pick up several machines that other buyers walked away from because the owner did not bother to clean and service them. To date they have all cleaned up well. Good luck.

@calgaryguy A local guy bought one in the fall from Southern Ontario. $3500 is what he paid. It seems to have a few chucks with it and the standard accessories. Just an FYI for you

3500 is what the guy is asking, Hate when they don't post price.
cant be viewed under power
Pass

Maybe?

I edited my original post to say that I contacted the seller and he said 3500 right away, no games.

Not viewed under power is a concern of mine for sure. Of course the beat up Hercus lathe at Regal Auctions that went for ~3000 recently (plus GST and buyers premium) couldnt be powered on either.

Maybe?
No external belt drive accessible that I can see from the 1800 manual. It has a double/triple belt that runs up under the headstock

You can still do a lot of evaluation when not under power - but main advantage of buying from private party is inspection under power. Do not compare prices as much to auctions - auctions can go wild either direction.

Check bed, check cross slide etc. for wear and then spin chuck in every gear. Not idea but you would be surprised at how many issues can be found.

It cannot be run under power as the lathe is at a site of a guy that sells a lot of stuff & neither has power nor know how. More or less this is an auction sale, except you have somewhat fixed starting bid price from which you can go down but not up.

Seller has said he wont allow anything more than a cursory visual inspection. No gearbox cover removal/inspection, no opening the electrics box, nothing.

I've told him I'm going to pass. Its not worth the risk for my budget...

Ya that would be red flags for me also

That's probabaly a smart move, given the obvious lack of care given to the machine you never know, that thing could have all sorts of broken inside....or it could not....that's a pretty steep gamble

Usually you can tell problem with gears by spinning the lathe chuck in different gears.

I guess seller thinks its a hot deal & does not want any trouble of having people take it apart and back together, possibly breaking something... or dropping cover on their foot.

So risk is same as auction or ... MORE.
