Clausing or Colchester? Either way, looks like a decent deal.

Mid to late 1950’s Colchester Master. Clausing just rebadged made in England Colchesters. Likely a soft bed and soft tailstock ram. On the good side, looks like the clutched head version.

What is the gismo called sitting on the floor between the face plate and 4 jaw chuck??? What machining operation would it be used ???

To the questions above, the answer is "Yes". Clausing marketed Colchester Lathes in North America to fill in gaps in their product lines, and it's not uncommon to see them referred to as a Clausing-Colchester machine.
