First thing I thought when I saw that was "I wonder how hard it would be to convert to a full manual machine. It looks very solid"

I've got one of those, its very solid machine.....30 taper, rigid ram and heavy. But......you know when your machine has a tape drive, its time for an upgrade! I know a guy who a few years ago was running a paper tape XLO....should have sold him the tape as an upgradel lol.

Its probably fair to say they are fantastic mechanical machine but with dated and finicky electronics. That whole cabinet one the right, the one with the tape drive (at least on mine) is filled with discrete logic chips and transistors that like to blow. On mine it is gone now and its been a (far to) long term project converting it Yaskawa servos. I used a bit of HSS and a jackshaft to mount the servos and the same design fits on all three axis......the mechanical is done, mostly wiring left to do. Going with Linux cnc, a nice network capable breakout board....hoping for 400ipm rapids!

The one in the ad looks unabused. I might works as is, but buying it and upgrading is imo a superior plan to "cnc'ing" a manual machine

Having just convert a mill, with the right kit you can bring any machine into the modern world. The only draw back is longevity of the machine as the conversion will greatly accelerate wear because cnc does not rest as we humans do even with manually controlled power feeds, it just goes on and on till the desired operation fails.
