I've seen it in person, and it is in very good condition. It uses the long 'Deckel' style collets. Since the motor is separate, it makes it possible to change it up if desired. A far better value than buying a new offshore clone.

As long as they are the 20mm collets. To the best of my knowledge and searching, nobody is producing the 16mm ones. Apparently you can get them custom made, but I am sure that the cost will be significant. I'm trying to position myself to be able to make a few of them myself......one day, providing I live long enough.....:p

Good luck in getting Deckel style collets. Sizing is limited on these. Vertex has them listed in their Catalog.
seriously, look it up, this has been dispelled so many times here. 20mm (which the Alexander 2CGD uses) U2/E355 collets are plentiful, metric and imperial. https://www.aliexpress.com/wholesale?catId=0&initiative_id=SB_20220527083213&SearchText=u2+collet

I have bought a bunch of these, excellent quality. For the in-between size you buy a ER16/ER20 16 mm straight collet chuck and a matching 16mm U2 collet. Shorten the ER16 shank and you are done for all the other sizes. That handles drill bits etc.

Endmills are generally nominal size such as 1/8,1/4,3/8, collets are available from AliExpress. Metric of course as well in 1mm increments.

Because you are making your own you can dispense with the buttress thread and save a bunch of puzzling/effort, just make a matching nut.
With a bit of care it isn't too challenging to make these, a 5C collet chuck will help with concentricity. A recent article in MEW got me to make 8mm WW collets, quite similiar process, just smaller.

Here is the irony, first we dump on Asian machines because the quality isn't the same and yet AliExpress and other sources provide good Asian quality.

Just pointing it out.

Yes, but I am not the one routinely dumping on Asian machines am I? I happily buy whatever I can afford, fix or enhance it and get on with life. I happened on a Alexander 2CGD for a very good price, had it been an Asian one at the same price I would still have been happy. Either way the U2/E355 collets I have bought are excellent.

Having been burned/disappointed more times than I care to count with the vaunted 'Made in USA' quality vs price, I look for alternatives whenever possible. That includes buying all my new cutters etc from AliExpress, with zero disappointments. Thread mills, inserts, taps, end mills, carbide and HSS. electronics, industrial sewing machine parts, nylon rod, whatever.

some prior discussion here

New Deckel So type TCGs are crazy expensive if you want to compare new vs new. They don't list price on web anymore but seems to me last time I looked was +4K USD

I know CutterMaster came up in conversation recently. They are listing a 5C TCG that looks remarkably like Shars 5C, but higher cost (*need to confirm accessories packaged*). First I thought it might be the upscale Taiwan model, but it mentions China in description

Shars 5C

Stefan has a recent video on Renzetti-tizing his import & a few other mods. Some of the Deckel vs clone mechanical features are mentioned during the teardown & is quite interesting.
I have an Accusize R8 (China) unit. I'll withhold comments until I've had legitimate run time on it, but I'm not overly enamored. It will be an improvement project & that's fine, I expected it to some degree. I've had some email exchanges with others who have Asian TCG's and I am of the opinion they are not created equally.

Your point is well taken. There is always someone (not @gerritv ) dumping on some outfit someplace. Often times right here in Canada. And there is always someone else pointing out the value for it. Individually we are all just fine. Collectively maybe not so much!

That famous phrase "it depends" is alive and well and thrives among us!

I have the Shars and can say overall not bad and less expensive than Accusize. Can comment on Accusize product other than R8. I've seen the Vertex product and I'd guess all three are on par.

There is another Asian supplier in Toronto (asc365) that sell Deckel clones, several versions in fact, looking at the pictures various product quality levels to boot (yes bought my powerfeed from there). This is sometimes one reason unless you know the supplier or can see the machine the gamble with some of money we play with is risky.

Added as an after thought @gerritv (and others) comments on sources used that work (or don't) reduces the risk. My comment on Asian sources was intended to remind all that we need both provided the quality meets or exceeds our expectations and while providing the best value. Old reliable is not also better than new and inexpensive.

I have those collets you speak of...... They don't fit. The body of the collet is 16mm not 20mm..... Bigger hammer I suppose......

But we already knew that your Alexander is older 16mm style :-) I made drawings of the indeixing ring etc parts for someone in the UK who was missing them, you could upgrade with a new head and go 20mm :-) For the machine that started this thread the 20mm will fit.
