I've got this basic milling vise for sale. 5" wide jaw. It has a removable swivel base. It's a craftex. It needs a bit of milling to make the rear jaw square. $100.

Here you can see the back jaw is slightly out of square. The jaw just needs to be faced a little perhaps 5 thou?

Good morning John, what would it cost to re-face the back jaw, could said work be done in your area or locally?

Bill

Here you can see the back jaw is slightly out of square.

I wonder if that is somewhat on purpose? If the CI is a bit soft, there might be enough flex in the bed / stationary jaw that it straightens out and holds the parts properly under load. If it were square to begin with (together with the flex) the part would not be held securely and “walk out” of the jaw under machining forces?

It might also be the jaw rather than the vise itself. Perhaps there is a burr or piece of swarf between the jaw and the vise body? Or possibly the front-and-back jaw surfaces aren't ground parallel? Replacement jaws ought to be easily available.

I’ll test it some more under load and see what happens. Good ideas gents.

Well I was working on fixing the jaw today. The cast iron is definitely out of whack not the jaw itself. I started out milling on the little CX600 (BIll you should recognize that cutter). I wasn't that happy with the finish or the results. So it ended up in the big mill. Vise in the vise. :)

I have the same vise that Janger is trying to "fix", The problem with them is much more open clearance of the slide surfaces than a better quality vise & the fact that the threaded tightener bolt engages the sliding block under the jaw. The movable jaw will always tilt back a bit when it comes up tight to anything, even something gripped in the very bottom of the two jaws will tip it back.
making a cut perpendicular to the stationary jaw wont fix it, it just moves the same problem back the thickness of the cut.
I have studied mine a bit and the only way I can see to make the situation better is to run the movable jaw up to the solid one and tighten a bit, that will tilt the movable jaw back at the top of the opening the amount allowed by the slide slack, now measure the top gap with feeler gauges. The face of the slide must be cut at an appropriate angle to eliminate the "top gap" whenever it comes up tight. The slide slop & underneath tightener becomes a non issue.

my 2 cents worth at least LOL

After milling the CI and putting it back together it works much better. Fixed jaw is now 90 degree to horizontal and parallel to the movable jaw.

Hi John, sounds like a job well done. Question what is the meaning of Cl never heard that before for a vise.

You have a PM.....

Hi Peter, that's a first time for me never heard CI used for cast iron. And here I though our once teenaged children knew everything and I knew nuttin. LOL

Never too old to learn!

Bill now has this vise. I mailed it to him along with some spare jaws. Postage came to $57ish. I had to send it in two boxes as the first attempt was over 30kg/66lbs and that is most Canada post will take. I hope you like it Bill.
