12 x 36 Gearhead Metal Lathe, $4500, Wabamun, AB

Feels too much - a 12 x 36 gear head with camlock spindle and accessories sold for $3000 or so with fees on Sunday in AB (near Red Deer).

This one does look cleaner and may have more accessories but $1500 is a big difference. And we are talking here about auction where things went for arm and a leg - a 16 speed drill press delta went for $400 with fees.

A new KING is $6k plus taxes so almost $7k although I don't see a light or coolant.

It would need a closer look but being that clean it may have very few hours on it.

I got no idea how people keep their lathes that spotless, There is always oil on the basksplash and small chips that I don't get wiped off. Oh well, he gets the Good Houskeeping seal of approval.

Nah before the sale just do a good cleanup. Does not mean anything - whatever machine is good or not. Actually a dirty machine that was recently used is a better bet to me - no one would work on a broken machine - so very recent work ==> machine must at least partially be good.

Used machine is a used machine - why would you pay close to new price for it - would you pay almost new price for used car? At least with a car you get somewhat (nowadays) reliable odometer. With a lathe need to inspect the bed... but what if they mostly did facing operations?

Any smart seller will clean up a machine... A really dirty machine, depending on the type of ditritus, can indicate neglect. I *love* when there are oil deposits around all the oiling spots. So it goes both ways. If you look in the pan, you can see the effects of a well cared for lathe. There will be lots of scratches, all shallow from regular cleaning - not much build up, ever. If you see a lot of really deep scratches, then the bed wasn't cleaned until it *really* needed it. I'm sort of in the mioddle, but I'm getting better!

After looking at the pictures really carefully, this is a lathe used by someone with almost OCD organization skills. It would be worth a checkout, to get a 'nearly new' lathe for a smaller price. New I'd expect it to be along the lines of PM's 12X36, say 5000 USD, 6200$ CAD.

My rule of thumb is that never-used-but-installed lathe is worth about 30% less than new and you start deducting from there. So the expectation is a little high. it was obviously used (seeing the tooling), and the guy cared for it. I think a solid value at about 3700-3800. For a frustrated, motivated buyer, 4000$ is 'okay' - any more and they should wait for a better deal.
