Tap sockets

Chicken lights

Forum Pony Express Driver
We had to tap a couple holes Monday and vise grips weren’t cutting it. Couldn’t really use a tap handle where the holes were. Ended up running back to my shop to grab some tap sockets from my tool box. Just curious if any machinists use these, we ended up using a tap socket and one of my long handle 3/8” ratchets to cut the threads.
Always seen a machinist power tap or use a tap handle, I’m also guessing vise grips are not industry standard for tapping

Thoughts?

What are tap sockets?

Kinda self explanatory- the square on the end of the tap you place in a tapping handle fits in a socket. Different size sockets for different size taps

I recently got a set of the Lisle sockets, very handy when space is tight. Still wind up using an adjustable wrench at times, as I have a variety of them too. Got one that is only 4" long for taps in odd places. Used it a lot for chasing exhaust manifold stud threads in Dodge Hemi heads after nut welding for extracting the broken parts of the studs. If I had the tap socket set when I was at the Chrysler dealer I would have used those instead, for sure.

LOL, my post above was mainly about Hemi and LS exhaust studs. I also weld a washer then a nut to get them out. Done hundreds of them.

My 12 point sockets were not a complete set, my dad bought a lot of stuff from a local snap on dealer way back. No idea why these were in the tool chest, maybe intended for some other purpose. Being on the farm our tools get used for some creative things. I do have a set of square sockets but they were from grandpa's days, old farm equipment had square nuts and bolts. Think it goes from 1/2" up to 1" they are 1/2" drive. Lots of old wrenches kicking around that were included with machines for adjusting things. A friend of mine has a 4x8 sheet of plywood with a collection of old wrenches with different names of companies cast in them.
