Tailstock turning attachment

Does anyone have one of these? I'm wondering how well they work and more specifically how are they kept horizontal to ensure the taper is kept on the horizontal plane and not vertical? I'd like to have one but I'm not yet willing to pay $200 for one when they are other ways to achieve a taper. I have no project in mind right now, I just like tooling.

Edit after thinking about it for a minute I guess the initial insertion to the tailstock would be important to how the taper is turned. I was thinking the whole thing turned but of course it would only be the live center end not the whole apparatus.

Same for me I was looking at it but not for $200, You already have this built in with your tailstock adjustment with limited angle have to see what the max angle you could do with the just the tailstock but I think you could make a device like this pretty easy too just not as convenient as this less just make a slot and clamp it instead of having it adjustable by crank..

max offset is 1/50, or 1" over 50" length, 1/2" over 25" etc, when using 60 degree points, so a cheap MT boring head might be a cheaper option as it easily has that range of travel.

I haven't don't the math yet but it appears you have... is that amount of offset (1/50) enough to do common morse tapers?

I had one (similar) for my 7X12. It worked well enough for making MT2/3 dead centers. I think most, if not all, of those things come out of India. Quality wasn't bad.

Yes it appears that India is the source of this one also and that sort of scares me.

You are supposed support the tool horizontally using a jig or straight edge as you firmly insert the taper into the tailstock and then hope it does not shift. They make small ones in the USA if you look.

I just move my tail stock over for large tapers and then laugh at brother's efforts to realign it later

Here’s something interesting I found.

How about boring head and add to it something like a straight shank live center for $5? Say:

should do about as well as this but for a much smaller cost. Note you would need something touch bigger than the link provided.

One could also convert some old live center to fit into the slot in the boring head.

I've probably ordered 4-5 items that shipped out of India. Haven't had to reject/return one yet. Shipping was quicker than China.

Boy, so different from my experience. You keep a rabbits foot in your pocket? Everything (3 items) I have ordered from India never came. Even that alignment bar I tried to get like yours had to be ordered elsewhere. Three strikes and you are out. I avoid them now.

I always get items but they are quite bad - i.e. poor quality.

If you realize they will be poor quality like 1980s China and are OK with that than pull the trigger.
