Tool Starrett 10th Indicator

Picked up this yesterday.

Anyone have a source for a 3.5" bezel and the little "nub" is missing from the workmen end of the stem?

Also am thinking the hands aren't lined up properly in the dials within the dials. Any suggestions? Thought I could turn a nub.

I contacted Starrett and will see what they come up with for parts.

FWIW I sent two digital mics to Starrett for repair and calibration and was pleasantly surprised by the cost.

Huh, that's good to know. I got given a Starret digital plunger-type indicator, but it's got a missing battery tray and I don't even know what else might be busted. I was kind of humming and hawing about what to do about it or whether it was even worth trying to get it repaired.

It was a bit of back-and-forthing with the service person but I was very pleased with the result.
I paid little for the mics knowing that I had to get them serviced. Most of the $300USD I paid to get them both repaired was recouped when I sold one of them.

Do you need the bezzle or the crystal?

The tips are standard thread afaik and can be made or found in the misc drawer :)

I assume it works and just needs a crystal and good cleaning and a stem? Tips are standard and easy to get - you can even get sets of them.

Crystal will probably not be cheap - only get it if the rest works perfect.

Thanks for all the comments!!

Everything seems to work well. The hands on the dials within the dial seem off. The one is at -0.1 and the other is at -0.07.

Everything else seems to function smoothly. Erveything is dirty, and there is dirt between the outer dial and the inner dial.

I wasn't clear - it is the crystal I need, but I'm assuming it comes complete with the bezel. That's quite worn, so replacing both would not be a bother.

Starrett did get back to me and are going to send a parts list.

David: I will have to talk to Starrett and see what repairs would be. This is my first 10ths indicator, and it's something to measure a piece of paper and have it come out at 40 units! And with a 3.5" dial, I can actually read it! THIS IS SO COOL!

I have several 10ths dial test indicators and one 1-micron dial indicator. I know I should NOT do this, but I love that feeling that you describe sooooo much that I use them way more often than I should. I just can't help myself. Even when I start with 1-thou indicator or even a half thou, before I know it, "I get that familiar itch......" and next thing you know there is a tenths there instead!

Yes, I know the reduced range is a problem...... So what!

Tom, sounds like you are well on the way with this one, and its a nice indicator. Did you contact Starrett Canada? Might be cheaper than the US given the international shipping. I've always found them to be excellent. Probably recounted too many times, but once I showed up at their place in Mississauga. Needed a battery cover for a caliper. They gave it to me and said it wasn't worth doing an invoice. Entirely refreshing attitude, and very different from Mitutoyo.

Anyway, some musings from one who repairs these things. Its difficult to rationalize sending out for repair. Just the shipping and parts usually outstrips their value. Watch crystals are cheap, new they're a few dollars on ebay from China. The problem is they don't come in that size. I've made them before,
I blabbered too much in the video, but it shows you how.

I would service that indicator. It carries a bit of risk (I messed the odd one up learning). They all to attract some dirt inside and benefit from a cleaning, especially without a crystal giving a bit of protection. Service means disassembly, cleaning, repair if necessary and reassembly (no oil!). Some soap and water might do wonders for that dial....so it will look nice and bright under the new crystal!

Another option for service is:

Mark is highly recommended by Keith Rucker (Vintage Machinery on Youtube) and others. I contacted him a few years ago but in the end I serviced a couple of old dial indicators myself. He responded quickly to my email and gave me a rough estimate of USD $40 to $50 plus postage although he said if it needed parts that weren't apparent, the price would be higher.

I know of a couple of businesses in the Edmonton area that do this sort of work. Where are you located?

Thanks! I'll check it out.

I'm on Vancouver Island, but I get to Edmonton a couple of times a year, so that could work. The contact information would be appreciated!

I can't seem to find the fellows business card. I will stop by today or tomorrow at his address and get his contact information and post it.

There is an English YouTuber in Newcastle named John that hosted a friend who repairs/services indicators. He uses his saliva to clean the dial face.

clever fellow. To think about all the indicators I passed up on because they needed a new crystal and I didn't want to bother with needing to get repairs done
