Any one up for another project? They say good condition, I'd hate to see their version of "not so good" condition. If you have the need and the room for a machine this size it could be worth fixing up.

Perhaps they should have replaced the shear pin in the drive train with the same soft material, and not some hardened steel variety….

To be fair, they do disclose the fact that three gears need repair.

I agree that is a silly price for what will be a major repair. The long one means making a whole new shaft and and those gears really should be hobbed.

otoh, there are not too makes more worthy of the effort than a Holbrook. For me, the decision would rest on what came with it and hood good or worn the rest of it was. Howewver to buy a broken lathe, then have to recondition (scrape) it, then start buying all the tooling....pass

I think you have some valid points @Mcgyver. Certainly need to consider the pros & cons carefully before tackling such a project. The pedigree of that machine does make worthwhile to try and salvage it.
 
it surely is a project. Good bones, but not for the faint of heart. with 2 chucks it would be worth nearly that much, say within counter offer range
 
I sought out some opinions from the UK Holbrook group. Quite a bit of helpful information has been offered by people who know these lathes intimately. Mostly about how to cut or repair the damaged gear(s) but also some general observations. Look HERE.
