Easy Way to Install Sanding Discs

This is an old trick, but some may not be aware of it. Sanding discs are almost impossible to install on a bench sander without the glue sticking to the plate while you are trying to slide it down.

The answer is to lay a rule on the film side and cut half the film off. Then insert the half of the disc with the film still intact. Stick the glued side to the wheel and then turn it to remove the other side of the film.

The last order of disks I got for my 20" Kalamazoo disc sander came with a "helpful tip sheet." Their trick is similar to yours, except they recommend folding over one half after drawing a line with a rule and a Sharpie. One of the problems with the bigger discs is that the protective film is thicker than your standard 6" disc sander, so if you fold it over and your brand of sander doesn't have an adjustment to retract the table, the film can be too thick to manage doubled over.

In such cases your trick would be the better option. Have you had any issues slicing the paper or cloth backing when cutting, or do you pull the film away first, then cut?

Thanks for posting.
