    Must have hand tools?

A sheet metal guage wheel is more of a ballpark instrument , not a precision go no-go . So even the ones at a PA would work fine.

    I TIGed

Good Morning, I sure others have done it as well, chuckle. But it was my first aluminum part welded by TIG. I'm pretty pleased with myself, another skill learned , certainly not mastered, though. I didn't get that stack of dimes, but it looks like someday I could. The welder was KMS Magnum Wave...

Where to source miscellaneous small hardware?

PA is taking to stocking plastic trays of pins, roll pins, set screws ,etc. And one of the trays is called "shop assortment". It has woodruff keys . They frequently go on sale as well.

    Cobalt End Mills

I consider the common sized end mills as disposable , but I have a sloppy mill/drill. If I want it close, there is no way I can hog. So I don't feel bad buying the $5 special at KMS.

    PHS Issue

There must be at least a hundred modifications to the 4x6 bandsaw. One of the more clever used a small cheap drill press vise mounted to a block of wood cut at an angle and a piece of PVC pipe as a stop so the saw wouldn't cut off a vise hold down wing . I'm not sure if it would work with a...

    How About That.

How about that ! I just needed and used two tools not on anyone's list of must haves. I'm redoing a 24" rock saw, see my post on cutting aluminum,. I removed the arbor and the bearing was set back from the flange . My $9.95 PA small hole guage said .277" . I then checked the rails next, using a...

    Cutting Aluminum

One other amusing thing I forgot, John was left handed, the arbor is on the right and the carriage with it's adjustment cranks is on the left, backwards to the factory ones. chuckle.

    Cutting Aluminum

Dabber, the hood is 48x26x16 , I don't think it will fit on a either the drill press or the mill/drill. I have an air nibber, but I thought they were for sheet metal work. I guess with all this help, I should explain a little about rock slab saws and this one. Someone might have an interest in...

    Cutting Aluminum

My computer skills involve looking for each key, but here is factory made lapidary saw to give you an idea http://www.hplapidary.com/en/highland-park-style-24-inch-slab-saw-model-24-model-24-call-for-shipping . The one we have is a home made one that was rebuilt in a shop with a new tub and...

    Cutting Aluminum

If the cut was a straight line , a Skilful saw and any old blade works but this is a couple of 1 1/2" half moon cuts on the edge of a aluminum hood, I guess it's about 1/8 or 3/16' thick. Much too tight for a jig saw, a hole saw on the edge with a hand held drill motor is asking for trouble. If...

Sticky What Machines Do You have?

Metal working machines in order of purchase: Miller 250x MIG. It's been called the second worst welder Miller ever mad. The 250 was the worst. The start is very rough, .023 can be a challenge. By the 252, they had the bugs worked out. It's paid for itself a few times over. And that is without...

TWS 12 x 36 looking for advice, My first lathe?

It's not a waste, learning which lathes are good and which are a pass over. At that price it was high. I put in closed bid on a Canadian made Standard Modern 1340 , it had been run out of oil. I put in a bid of $2500, it went for $2800. Oh , how I wanted it. I ended up with a mill/drill and a...

    Shaper Videos

I have 6" shop built shaper that I'm working on, off and on. It's more in the nature of a completion than a rebuild. I find myself thinking how handy something in the 10" range would be. I've got a Peerless Machine and Tool of Guelph Ont. power hacksaw up and running. A different company than...

TWS 12 x 36 looking for advice, My first lathe?

I have BB 1026 wood shaper, it's a current production model, and needed parts. I got some from BB and some from Grizzly. I live near the border, Grizzly might even be closer. I needed a back cover so I ordered from Grizzly. It was back ordered, a 2 or 3 month wait. Grizzly would only ship to the...

TWS 12 x 36 looking for advice, My first lathe?

Here is the write up on those models of lathe http://www.lathes.co.uk/taiwan/ I have the BusyBee version, Dabber had one . They are a better lathe than current 12" Chinese lathes. the bed is wider and the saddle a bit larger. They are back geared belt drive lathe, old well proven technology...

    Must have hand tools?

I find deep offsets to be very handy, much more so than the standard combinations. I pick them up at the fleamarket when I see them.

    Grinder Metal Dust Collection

I'm more on woodworking then metalworking forums. My hobby is more of the repairing, making and modifying machinery for use, then of the joy of machining . We think of sawdust as fairly harmless, well with there have been a number of hobby woodworkers who have had to give up their hobby...
