• Hi - We're having intermittent forum issues. Posts, alerts, and anything involving email like signing up or password changes are having problems but not for everyone or everywhere. Josh is working on it. No ETA right now. Thanks Josh - BTW this is a volunteer forum so SLA's are just best effort. EDIT -> I manually batch updated about 25 people stuck on the email notification. Try logging in now with your password. EDIT -> May 8/23. I updated another bunch of users stuck on email notifications. Try to login if you are stuck. If you really can't get in contact us on facebook or if you know a forum member get them to ask us.

Compound needs a better degree dial

I have an older gen Newall DRO on the lathe (balls in tube style scales). Its a 3-axis display but I removed the 3rd (compound) some time ago. I'm not sure what flavor of language it reads. I've heard they are 'standard' to many mainstream DRO's but that might be a loaded term with all the...

Wanted: 9 point knee handle for clone bridgeport

Yes, I'm just saying 'multi-lug' is more related to allowing the handle to détente into more positions, not just about knee lifting. Yes, you could have one pin or tenon only engaging any one of 9 slots. The only downside is 9X the stress on that single element vs distributed to all, although...

Wanted: 9 point knee handle for clone bridgeport

Not sure but I don't think its related to lifting power. Often the handle is positioned in a way so the operator can fine feed or position the knee/table. Better control leveraged at 3:00 vs 6:00 where the bar would be hanging low/ Also what side of the mill head you are standing at. Longwinded...

Compound needs a better degree dial

There are all kinds of those digital angle finders, usually hooked up to woodworking tools. Depending on how you want to harvest the readout unit or utilize the scales, other units might integrate better to a lathe compound. I have one, seem to recall repeatable to a degree on a gage block angle.

Tips/Techniques Parasitic Draw of Cordless Tools

I usually unplug my batteries from tools for no good reason than it seems like the right thing to do. Maybe something is leaning on the trigger or like my drill, the first trigger pull turns the LED spotlight on. Modern lithium packs for these applications all have low voltage sensing (should...

Compound needs a better degree dial

I think you could increase the accuracy of compound with 3 improvements 1. replace the pointer with a full 360-deg increment indicator as a band/sleeve over the circular base segment 2. replace the arc window degree indicator with a vernier scale to yield more exact even degrees & fractional...

Compound needs a better degree dial

I've been waiting for one of you smart guys to find the right electronic gizmo. Ideally, at least on my style of lathe, it should be able to integrate the sensor into the middle area now occupied by cast iron. The T-slot area is off limits & outside of that is running out of room or intersects...

How to finish a lathe gib holder

I wasn't quite sure if your issue was the same as mine, disregard if not. My 14x40 had a very vague feeling saddle lock. Very little contact area & it was acting at a distance from the saddle underside. It would spin on its axle, loose orientation or stick the saddle movement depending on the...

KBC Tools & Machinery recent Catalogue

@Dusty you might be aware but just in case, screw machines / stub drills are predominantly 135-deg point angle. Screw & CNC machines have no issue with this because they are usually more rigid, less play & CAM can be optimized. For manual mortals like us, best practice would be to spot drill...

KBC Tools & Machinery recent Catalogue

@David88 got you the right diameter but its a jobber (regular length) if that matters. I think I was down this path before & I don't recall much selection in stub length + metric combination. Only IMP fractional & numbered, individual or sets. I'm not sure if they are phasing out the paper...

Fixing RF45 milling machine (noisy gearbox) AndysMachines

I never considered the straight cut gear aspect. OTOH looks like that's what I have in my lathe. Probably from the same factory LOL. Aside from Andy changing/upgrading his bearings, maybe one scratchy one in the lot, seems like his biggest issue may have been the iffy key / keyway allowing the...

Fixing RF45 milling machine (noisy gearbox) AndysMachines

Well there is normal gear noise & there is RF-45 'clackety-clack something else' noise. Plenty of lathes & machines have entirely steel, often much higher gear counts or more complex driveline arrangements and they run with with a pleasing hum. My 14x40 lathe was the same vintage & country of...

Fixing RF45 milling machine (noisy gearbox) AndysMachines

Came across this very good video showing what's in the guts of the typical RF-45 mill & one of (many apparently) potential sources of gearbox noise. Mine was a growler from day one & seemed to be getting worse over time, but I lacked the confidence or know how to tear down, investigate &...

    No Suction

Yup. I have a reduction nozzle on the end of mine which kind of pre-filters the bigger swarf nests, but clogging over time can still happen. I've also noticed because the chips can be a bit oily, it makes for mung making conditions when alternating vacuum use for regular shop cleanup. Sawdust in...

    Lathe sine bar

Yes I saw that one. Sine bars seem happiest resting on gage stack vertically like on a surface plate or table, but less fun orientated on their side in a lathe angle setup. Trying to make surface contact & adjusting the compound & not let blocks slip into the chip tray needs more hands than I...

Tool More information on cheap digital calipers

I was measuring some some fixtures that had magnets in them. Never again. Once the jaws or anvils become magnetized they attract micro swarf & become useless for measuring the other 99.99% of the time & can lead to machining screw ups. My cheapo demagnetizer didn't work too well. I'm sure there...

    Lathe sine bar

I thought I had some setup pictures in my album but I guess not. Anyways I bought one of these mini offshore magnetic sine bars. The general idea was to set the angle using standard gage blocks, lock it into position (it has a hex key lock). Apply that to a datum surface on the lathe & indicate...
