• Hi - We're having intermittent forum issues. Posts, alerts, and anything involving email like signing up or password changes are having problems but not for everyone or everywhere. Josh is working on it. No ETA right now. Thanks Josh - BTW this is a volunteer forum so SLA's are just best effort. EDIT -> I manually batch updated about 25 people stuck on the email notification. Try logging in now with your password. EDIT -> May 8/23. I updated another bunch of users stuck on email notifications. Try to login if you are stuck. If you really can't get in contact us on facebook or if you know a forum member get them to ask us.

There’s some re-organizing and purging that will need to happen. I’ll be moving the mill a bit as well. I would like to rebuild the shop 16x20 or maybe a bit bigger in a few years too.

3ph motor back in with a new sturdier adapter for mounting. The frame size of the original DC motor was massive. I also machined a new sheave for my ideal speed range/power curve. Triple sheaves for A/4L belts (not A/B) don’t seem to be readily available. Ordered a better potentiometer with...

    $70million Lotto Max

Yup, I heard an analysis recently that said that it’s not that most lottery winners blow their money it’s just that those are the ones you hear about. Personally I can’t do it. Never bought one in my life. I can’t gamble either. Not sure how to explain it, it’s like my brain isn’t wired for it.

I figured out the servo issue before clearpath got back to me. The drive system has slop in it because of there’s a dog clutch in the countershaft assembly where you switch between high and low range speeds. I think this was tricking the servo into tuning itself incorrectly. I re-ran the auto...

Brown&Sharp No2 surface grinder any good?

Why not rewind to 240v? I’ve had it done twice, both for milling machines with unusual motors. Cost me ~$400 each time.

1/2 Hp motor on sale at Princess Auto

56C is a fairly standard frame size in my experience. Meant to be mounted by the face. The J prefix is not a nema standard code, the manufacturer has added that to denote something. My guess is non-standard shaft length from the face.

BRAND NEW LILIAN MILLING MACHINE MOTORCYCLE SWAP? Westport, ON

Something about the background in that photo rings a bell. I swear I saw an ad for a smaller mill for sale a while back in that same shop…

Yeah I’ll keep checking the ways with my level as I work through some other stuff. The clearpath AC servo is giving me some trouble at the moment. When I ran it uncoupled with default tuning (which is for an uncoupled motor) it was amazingly smooth and steady at a given rpm and ramping between...

    Dividing head restoration

How big is the key? One way is to drill through the key and tap threads. Thread in a bolt to act as a jacks screw. Might not work if it’s a really small key.

I levelled the lathe during the week. After getting it the first time I had to make adjustments for another couple days until it settled. Forgot to take pictures but I used my master level (VIS .0005/10” resolution) and 1-2-3 blocks on the flats and v blocks on the v ways. I measured very...

1968 Schaublin 53 at Powermaster Machinery, Mississauga ON

~400v is European standard for 3 phase so that makes sense. This machine has caught my eye too but I don’t have the space or the money. The price seems pretty reasonable considering it has so many accessories with it like a dividing head, hi-speed quill head etc.

    Lathe Gears, $75, Claresholm, AB

DP with 20 PA is rather difficult to find. I have the same problem, hendey change gears are 18DP/20PA. Even the involute cutters are hard to find.

    Lathe Gears, $75, Claresholm, AB

No pairs on the Churchill but I have seen lathes before where for certain combinations you need two of the same size gear. I think my old plain change (no QCGB) Logan was like that. The Churchill was 30t stud, 120 on the box for all imperial threads and then a 127 on the box and a few...

The Churchill lathe I used to have had splined change gears just like that.

The bed rests on 4 levelling screws built in. They’re 7/8” or maybe 1” dog point set screws with locking nuts. Interestingly they are not all at the 4 corners of the base. The front tailstock side levelling screw is positioned about 6” back from the front of the base and the rear tailstock side...

    Metal Coating Assistance

I have a friend who does mould work and pattern making for casting , injection molding and similar applications. I know that he gets 7075 parts electroless nickel plated for some applications. The coating thickness is very uniform, much better than hard anodizing and the coated surface is...

I think I made a couple of assumptions that maybe I shouldn’t have? 1. That as long as the carriage was solid on the ways (not rocking or twisting) it wouldn’t matter if it was scraped in to full contact yet as it would still follow the ways as straight as the ways are for the purpose of...

I did check the tailstock, its the same issue with the fit, the regrind did change the the geometry slightly. Fortunately because the headstock was taken from another machine by Peter to make this one whole, it was actually a few thou lower than the tailstock to begin with. I figured I could do...

I got the lathe moved into my shop on Thursday night. Was about as difficult as I expected. Not terrible but it took about an hour. The doorway was a close fit. I modified the existing motor mount adapter to work with the 143 frame clearpath servo. I also ran the servo controlled by the...

They fit annd assemble the machines there. Not sure where the castings come from but they could very well be local, there are still a number of large foundries in southern ontario.

Stanko Lathe Model 165 - 41"x200", Edmonton, AB

Speed is the bigger issue using a lathe this size to make small parts. Max spindle speed is 500rpm and a 40” chuck is probably not even rated for that.

Strangely it seems to move a tenth or two in the direction I’m trying to get it to go just sitting overnight in between sessions working on it. Measuring to tenths is tricky business. I think it’s as good as it’s going to get. Somewhere in the middle the of the 0-4 I’m looking for. In other...

I’ve been scraping away and getting pretty close now. After getting it to sit tight in the angled ways it was out a thou in both directions across 12”. I’ve done a few passes now to remove those errors and I’m at 2 tenths low and 7 tenths toward the front/apron side at the far end. Ideally...

Plan is taking shape. I cleaned off the surface plate and heaved the headstock up there on some 2-4-6 blocks. I’m going to take a bunch of height measurements wherever I can before I begin scraping so I know how much I’m taking off. I’m going to sit down and do some trig in a bit to figure out...

@Mcgyver gets to say he told me so now  I did the blue check with the headstock just now. The bluing alone tells me I have good contact on the flat surface. I also got out an indicator to check for rocking/soft foot since it’s 4 points essentially. I was able to measure 1-2 tenths of...

The bed is on the base! The bed got its top coat on Thursday evening and it’s been baking in the sun since then. I lifted it up to pull out all the plastic sheeting to land it properly and bolt it down. I need a break from the sun now but I’d like to do a blue check with the headstock...

    ENCO R8 Boring/Facing Head - Orillia - $450

I have a wohlhaupter already so I didn’t get it. Nice guy with a lot of stuff. He had two small model V8s that I saw. The lathe was already gone, he said it was a PM 12x28. He has a king PDM 30 that is sold pending pick up. Piles of hand tools, taps and dies. He‘s doing a garage sale tomorrow...

Yes it’s a boring & Facing head! Much more expensive, like wohlhaupter, Narex etc. After boring a hole you can a spot face or similar using the facing function. Or cut an internal groove etc. in the same set up.
