• Hi - We're having intermittent forum issues. Posts, alerts, and anything involving email like signing up or password changes are having problems but not for everyone or everywhere. Josh is working on it. No ETA right now. Thanks Josh - BTW this is a volunteer forum so SLA's are just best effort. EDIT -> I manually batch updated about 25 people stuck on the email notification. Rear mounted parting blade.

Colchester lathes had a popular option of a rear tool post that remains mounted all the time. Every Colchester I've seen with the rear post always had the parting blade installed permanently, so speed may be one reason this remains popular. And I'd say fashion and the desire for historical...

someone in tri-cities area about to get a great deal on Colchester bantam 1600

to be honest I had to look away... or I'd have bid and been in big trouble with brother, brother's GF and my wife. But I sure wanted this at anything less than $1750, which I'm sure it likely went for. I've bought from Jutzi before and machines tend to go for good prices at his auctions at this...

    Colchester Master 2500 DRO installation

but does that require the entire depth of travel project to the rear of the lathe... and interfere with the compound stepper I plan to install?

    Colchester Master 2500 DRO installation

Look what I found! I knew someone had done this before, it just took me a while to find their example to copy. They mounted the scale towards the back of the slide, and the read head on a bracket to the rear of the saddle. They used too many shim pieces, and I'd like to put 90 degree...

i did see a post on the scale inside the cross slide... i need to find it and see if that option may work for me... i could order new scales

    Colchester Master 2500 DRO installation

I think I could very likely install the scale on the front, but the cable management would just suck and be far less elegant that could be installed to the rear.

Tips/Techniques Feedback on Brazing techniques and results

yeah, have seldom even used oxygen for brazing silver solders or various blends. Only mapp gas or plain acetylene and a turbo torch

Tips/Techniques Feedback on Brazing techniques and results

I concur with the others who say angle the torch. I have brazed thousands of fittings over the years, especially ones with heat sensitive components. I tend to heat gently at an angle and on the fittings rather than the tube. A fitting tends to have the greater thickness and transfers all the...

    Rear mounted parting blade.

from my understanding the rear mounted upside down parting blade is the best option. Mark Presling has a good videos that explains exactly why rear mounting parting is superior It comes down to this though. Mounted normally the parting blade wants to dig into the piece when things flex. On...

    Colchester Master 2500 DRO installation

Tom's lathe has 3 rods in the front, an unknown amount of gaps and the larger glass scales to fit. He has plenty of space to the rear of the lathe and no taper turning attachment. He likely won't get a taper attachment either or make one. I was thinking of getting rocketronics but now I need...

    lever activated collet chuck types..

Update: Okay so these are definitely not Brown and Sharpe #21 collets. I requested the dimension of the collets and got these dimensions back from the owner. Collet dimensions as follows: d= 1.887 L= 3.683 D= 2.392 d internal= 1.660. In my book that makes these collets DIN 6343-48, or as...

yep, when a hive is over crowded the hive workers decide to make new queens by feeding selected larvae exclusively royal jelly, which in turn creates queen bees. The hive makes several new queen larvae simultaneously. They are in special cells that look like peanuts and have more room to...

    Colchester Master 2500 DRO installation

Thanks to text messaging I now know more... The cross slide overhangs the rear of the bed sufficiently to install the rear head on the rear of the carriage along with the read head bracket for the long axis. I will incorporate one or both of these into a new mount for the coolant arm.

I've sent this info to the owner, along with the #21 B&S collet dimensions for him to verify if these are B&S collets, and have asked what he wants for these items if anyone wants to buy them

I'd actually like to hear your wife go on about bees. I want to learn as much as possible about beekeeping ps everyone, the honey has been located. I left it in the shop last night and totally blanked on that fact

    Colchester Master 2500 DRO installation

Yeah I have seen some installs in the cross slide but I dont think the glass scale will fit. I'd certainly install the reader head at the rear if I can make that work. I hate trying to plan these things when you don't have access to the machine. 25 minutes is too far away for a shop

Yeah I have no intention of even moving for at least 3 days. So I'll use that time to plan the order of operations. Step one, have his GF degrease the parts I wish to work on.

I promised to install the DRO on my brother's lathe within a week or so of his taking possession of the new to him Colchester Master 2500 lathe. One time on my way to Niagara on the Lake I was crossing the skyway and some idiot came flying by me, lost control god knows how and served left then right across every live lane without hitting a soul. They then hit the guardrail and I worried they'd hop over it. It would be a miracle if...
