• Hi - We're having intermittent forum issues. Posts, alerts, and anything involving email like signing up or password changes are having problems but not for everyone or everywhere. Josh is working on it. No ETA right now. Thanks Josh - BTW this is a volunteer forum so SLA's are just best effort. EDIT -> I manually batch updated about 25 people stuck on the email notification. Try logging in now with your password. If you really can't get in contact us on facebook or if you know a forum member get them to ask us.

    Colchester Master 2500 DRO installation

Can't speak to your stepper. The read head has to go out back because it's too big to fit inside the cross-slide. Magnetic strip is very thin and fits inside with just a little relief for clearance. I suppose, even the head could be dropped down into the cross-slide but that would result in a...

Here you go. @Xyphota blazed that Trail for us. I've already laid mine out the same way and have about 90% of the design done. Just need to wait for perfect order timing to get the DRO and get it done. Post in thread 'DRO install on Myford ML7R'...

    Rear mounted parting blade.

I've been parting upside down on the front for a decade. Works great. But I fail to see the advantage of a rear mount other than for lathes that cannot be run in reverse. I do see why @DPittman did it that way though because he wanted to preserve his front mount. @DPittman - I'm also...

    Colchester Master 2500 DRO installation

I agree. @thestelster s proposed location would work. I know cuz I just looked. However, I want to put my cross-slide scale inside the cross slide and the only convenient place to put the sensor is behind the cross-slide. That means the sensor cable for it is out back. Since I don't want a...

    Colchester Master 2500 DRO installation

@thestelster & @TorontoBuilder I have the exact same problems and lathe design. That feed rack just under the front Gibb is the biggest issue. I don't know about mounting a scale behind the start/stop rod. I fundamentally prefer it out back. I don't have a taper attachment. Yet...

Tool Tooling up a milling machine

One of the many reasons for not going crazy tooling up a new machine (the real topic of this thread - imagine that) is that you never know what kind of used gold will fall into your lap. I believe I got the end mill holders early in my learning curve with the bigger mill and after I had an...

@Aburg Rapid Prototype - your bee suit reminds me of a story. 55 years ago, I was out walking in the woods with my mother who is hyper allergic to bees and wasps. We were standing in the middle of a blueberry patch admiring an ironwood tree when I heard the wasps growling. I looked down...

So my understanding is that swarming happens for just two reasons. Overcrowding and everyone leaves, or a new queen leaves with some mutinous workers who don't want to serve the old Bi*** anymore. I've never heard the internal war story before. But since they block off the breeding chamber in...

    Gear for threading dial

Ahhhh. GREAT IDEA! I Like that WAY BETTER than just machining an existing bolt. And yes, you could use a hardeneable steel but why bother. Any kind of steel will cut nylon. I also totally agree with grinding a tool to make it an acme thread. Are ANY leade screws 60 degree? I would think they...

Really? When that happens to me, I just step out of them and walk away. "Wasn't me!" and "Who the Fk stunk up my shop!"

    Gear for threading dial

Yup, I agree. Doesn't even need to be grade 8. Which is a good thing cuz I think it would be hard to find a grade 8 bolt with a course thread like that.....

    Gear for threading dial

I like this. A threading dial carries no load whatsoever. It just sits there and goes for a ride. If one printed a nylon gear, it "might" last forever. Ive seen some BB Threading dials on the left side of the carriage. I don't like that. This would make it possible to move it to the right side...

I considered just leaving your comments alone Degen, but it's an issue worthy of a good healthy debate. Who knows, you might even change my mind. I cannot see how a rag or a piece of silicon or whatever makes long stringy swarf any more or less dangerous. Long swarf is dangerous. Period. I...

Tool Tooling up a milling machine

There you go. Another example of me not saying enough..... Yes, my HD Dewalt cordless drill sits on the work bench behind my mill with a castle nut adapter in it for just that reason. (mine has a castle drive system instead of a square drive). But why wear out my knee screw needlessly...... I...

Tool Tooling up a milling machine

I pressed send right after @thestelster's post. See my comments about perfect fit required for R8. Taken in that context, I agree with Stel's comments and those of other experienced machinists posted earlier. There is no right and wrong here. It all depends. What do I have and what do I...

Tool Tooling up a milling machine

I will have to learn to be a little less brief about what I say. Perhaps too much info is better than too little. Regarding R8 draw bar torque. My mill has a very deliberate oiling port at the top of the drawbar. The Bridgeport manual says to add a few drops of spindle oil periodically...

We have two wild honey bee hives here on my farm. One is in a giant walnut tree, and the other is in a wild black cherry. They are fascinating to watch. In the heat of high summer, they actually cool the hive by lining up in formation 4 or 5 ranks deep around the inside perimeter of a 3 inch...

    Colchester Master 2500 DRO installation

I'd suggest embedding the scale inside the cross slide (which is my plan), but I think slim glass won't fit. Unless you are thinking something I don't understand or missed, you only have two choices - right side or left side of cross slide. Either way, I'd put the sensor at the back just to...

    Colchester Master 2500 DRO installation

I felt the same way. Didn't like having to crawl behind my lathe or remove the splash shield for access either. But I have abandoned the idea. Too many shafts and a moving saddle that engages a rack gear in the way. I plan to put mine on the back too.

    Gear for threading dial

Ya, sorry about that. Kinda dumb to leave out the leadscrew diameter. Mine is 7/8" So 7/8 - 8 with a 24 tooth gear on the thread dial that mates very nicely and firmly with the leade screw.
  24. Susquatch

    Gear for threading dial

I don't know if this has value here or not. The thread dial gear on my lathe has 24 teeth and my leade screw is 8tpi. If nothing else, it's a data point. Regarding Craig's discussion above, the only gear engagement for my leade screw is the half nut and the threading dial gear. The half nut...

    14” metal saw

That's sorta what I do. I put the saw inside the shop on the edge of the 16ft doorway sill right in the middle of the door opening so the dust sprays out onto the driveway and is unlikely to get tracked back in.

Hi do you have a tip how to expand a stainless steel pipe

Yes Marc, that is correct. Are you trying to expand the pipe so another piece of the same size pipe can be inserted? If so, wouldn't it be easier to just make the pipe smaller instead of bigger?
  29. Susquatch

Hi do you have a tip how to expand a stainless steel pipe

That makes perfect sense to me. Let's see what @Dan Dubeau says...... If that is the case, then why not shrink the other end instead of expanding it? That's a LOT EASIER to do!
