Sticky What Machines Do You have?

Metal working machines in order of purchase: Miller 250x MIG. It's been called the second worst welder Miller ever mad. The 250 was the worst. The start is very rough, .023 can be a challenge. By the 252, they had the bugs worked out. It's paid for itself a few times over. And that is without...

TWS 12 x 36 looking for advice, My first lathe?

It's not a waste, learning which lathes are good and which are a pass over. At that price it was high. I put in closed bid on a Canadian made Standard Modern 1340 , it had been run out of oil. I put in a bid of $2500, it went for $2800. Oh , how I wanted it. I ended up with a mill/drill and a...

    Shaper Videos

I have 6" shop built shaper that I'm working on, off and on. It's more in the nature of a completion than a rebuild. I find myself thinking how handy something in the 10" range would be. I've got a Peerless Machine and Tool of Guelph Ont. power hacksaw up and running. A different company than...

TWS 12 x 36 looking for advice, My first lathe?

I have BB 1026 wood shaper, it's a current production model, and needed parts. I got some from BB and some from Grizzly. I live near the border, Grizzly might even be closer. I needed a back cover so I ordered from Grizzly. It was back ordered, a 2 or 3 month wait. Grizzly would only ship to the...

TWS 12 x 36 looking for advice, My first lathe?

Here is the write up on those models of lathe http://www.lathes.co.uk/taiwan/ I have the BusyBee version, Dabber had one . They are a better lathe than current 12" Chinese lathes. the bed is wider and the saddle a bit larger. They are back geared belt drive lathe, old well proven technology...

    Must have hand tools?

I find deep offsets to be very handy, much more so than the standard combinations. I pick them up at the fleamarket when I see them.

    Grinder Metal Dust Collection

I'm more on woodworking then metalworking forums. My hobby is more of the repairing, making and modifying machinery for use, then of the joy of machining . We think of sawdust as fairly harmless, well with there have been a number of hobby woodworkers who have had to give up their hobby...

    Must have hand tools?

No, they weren't. I'm old enough to remember when buying a socket set hurt. In the early '80s, a screaming deal at McLeods (sp) $49.99 for a 3/8" drive S-K set. In fact buying good tools was a carefully considered decision.

    Grinder Metal Dust Collection

A very good trick is to use a mister, it both cools the metal and cleans the air. I bought the mixer and the flex nozzle off a Chinese seller for $15 . I haven't hooked it up yet, it needs an air pressure regulator and pop bottle reservoir. Someone on Hobby Machinist forum, posted the address...

    Must have hand tools?

Drill index boxes seem to come in two patterns, the Huot and the one like your Snap-on. I have some like your Snap-On with Union -Butterfield , their competitor Cleveland, and Canadian Tire tabs on them. The Canadian Tire one, it was just the box, I filled it with Butterfield cobalt . Who...

    Grinder Metal Dust Collection

Grinder dust can not be allowed to float around, it causes silicosis, miners' lung.

    Must have hand tools?

I've read that the Chinese mics are a copies of the Swiss Etalon. I gave my Chinese set to my son before I ever even used them when I bought a Polish VIS set. And the Swiss Etalon are way beyond my budget. So I can't say one way or another. That Mituyoyo mic looks like a friction thimble...

Lathe Purchase, move, setup and Lathe Stand build

I just used a brush, I'm not that fussy about finish. I can't be ,I'm the one doing the painting. Besides, what can you expect with dollar store paint brushes. I have used it with a HVLP gun . That was my first try at spraying anything. But be warned, we used it at work, it's thick and nasty...

Lathe Purchase, move, setup and Lathe Stand build

I've used General Paint Industrial enamel . It's pretty thick stuff and nasty , but it dries hard and doesn't seem affected by oil. You can get it colour tinted, mine is a cream that matches the mill/drill. I also made a splash guard.

It's Brown and Sharp , better than Starrett,. Early ones were made in Rhode Island ,later ones in Switzerland .

Lathe Purchase, move, setup and Lathe Stand build

If it's not in that vid, one of his other ones shows the headstock alignment. On these import lathes, it's nothing more than cap screws that shift it sideways.

Lathe Purchase, move, setup and Lathe Stand build

I think it might be in this vid ,it's in one of his anyway, but Wes aligns a headstock. In these imports ,it's surprisingly easy. I generally ignore YouTube vids of younger producers, but this guy seems to know what he's doing.

    new DCMT toolholders

We assume postal service is efficient and honest, if somewhat slow. In a lot of the world that simply isn't true. I've gotten books from South Africa,, they use courier if they want to be assured it will arrive.
